shouldnt there be MORE cemetaries?
just a weird thought....

with all these people in the world and the number rising higher all the time...shouldnt there be MORE cemetaries popping up?

how come you never see any new cemetaries?

Re: shouldnt there be MORE cemetaries?
ive thought of that...stll makes no sense unless the vast majority are being cremated.

the funeral companies do not like to sell 'cremation' as its so much less expensive...they will do everything they can to deter ths option....they want the bigger money.

i see new buildings going up and new roads laid...but no new cemetaries.

Re: shouldnt there be MORE cemetaries?
I thought about that too robin but it's starting to become the way of choice.People hope that with their ash's in their families hands that in some way it's more comforting in different ways. Also with the value of land these days? One would think that cemetaries would not be a first choice to a person who might want to sell prime land.A developer would pay much more than a cemetary I would think. But you do raise a good point.

Maybe instead of people getting there plot? Cems are putting multiple bodies in a single plot to save space without the families knowing..

Multiple Occupancy plots? You haven't thought this through - there would need to be multiple headstones and that would give the game away - you know, relatives turning up at the grave and either seeing no headstone or 4 or 5...

Where I stay, cememtary space is a real problem, and the local authority are trying to find spare ground close to town. A possible new cemetary has been identified on a greenfiled site on the edge of the city, and people are dying to get in...It's going to become the dead centre of town.

Sorry, couldn't resist it.

Not if you bury a bunch of bodies in one spot and as for the headstones?

They only take up a very small amount of space and you don't need a hole beneath a headstone for the family to think that there loved one is actually there

Re: shouldnt there be MORE cemetaries?
Ok. There's a plot in the ground with a dead dude in it. There's also a headstone. The supervisor realises one day that they're almost out of space. "Oh hell. What are we gonna do with the bodies due in today?"
"Well boss", says the digger, we could start putting them in one on top of another."

Off they go and start digging up the ground at one grave. The funeral party turn up, the new coffin is put in on top of the old one and nobody questions why the headstone isn't the one they commisioned, but belongs to someone else who died 5 years ago. They also don't mind that the coffin is only a foot below the surface.

I don't think your getting what i am trying to say,so here it goes again lol

You have a bunch of bodies-whino's/street people etc.You bury them in a massive hole.
The families want a grave for each of them. And the cemetary chief says that each will have one but in reality he has put alot of bodies in one mass grave.

Then the cem boss let's the families buy a tombstone and they place it(where they think there loved one is buried)at the spot..
The tombstone only takes up about 2x3 feet of space. If there was a body under the stone it would take up atleast 8x3 feet .But there is no body there and the boss has saved himself alot of space. And the family isn't the wiser for what has happened

Yup - you're right. I'm not getting what you're saying.

You have a bunch of bodies-whino's/street people etc.You bury them in a massive hole. (Are you for real)
The families want a grave for each of them. And the cemetary chief says that each will have one but in reality he has put alot of bodies in one mass grave.

Don't the families get suspicious when they go to the funeral expecting to see a coffin being lowered into the grave and buried? How do you get round that one?

Then the cem boss let's the families buy a tombstone and they place it(where they think there loved one is buried)at the spot..

You mean, where they saw the coffin go into the ground?

The tombstone only takes up about 2x3 feet of space. If there was a body under the stone it would take up atleast 8x3 feet.

This much area on the surface has to be preserved to keep it looking real, whether it is or not. People know what a grave should look like - have you ever seen one?

But there is no body there and the boss has saved himself alot of space. And the family isn't the wiser for what has happened.

The bottom line is that every tombstone needs space around it. You can't have another tomstone encroach on this space (8x3 feet as you suggest) Can't you see the problem with this. If not, start your own cemetary and let us know how you get on.

Most cemetaries are temporary. People think that they buy a plot but usually it is just a lease. After about 60-70 years or so the remains are dug up and disposed of.

really??
youd think that after 60 or 70 years, there would be NO body...but alas we have to preserve our dead...with embalming fluids.

so the bodies should be stacking up.

Maybe they should start burying people in an upright position. Sort of like they're Eternal Straphangers on a bus or subway.

So you've never seen a tombstone older than 70 years?

Dude, you really need to do some more research to make your lies more credible.

I was talking in the general sense. Of course there are cemeteries, some centuries or even millenia old. What I meant was that there isn't such a big expansion in cemetaries because most in the western world are indeed temporary. Three in my area were dug up in the last two decades to make room for urban development. In two cases the remains and caskets went into an industrial incinereator, the third ended up in a landfill. All three were on public land leased from the goverment. When the lease ended, 70 years is standard I believe, the ownership was transfered to local goverment who could use the land as it deemed necessary.
In two of the cemeteries there hadn't been any burials in 30 years so very few relatives to complain or even notice.

And off course in many countries cremation is prefered over burial.

Most cemetery;s have a 100 year clause in their originating paperwork.

Doesn't matter after that.

Re: shouldnt there be MORE cemetaries?
The is a small monastary in the Sinai desert where there is very little arable land. When one of the monks die, he is buried in one of the few graves that is available. The remains of the former occupant of the grave are exhumed, cleaned and stored in an ossuarium where many others have already found their final resting place.

In the catacombs of Paris for many centuries people stored the skeletal remains of their deceased. Estimations are that the number is at least seven million, possibly much higher. Stack upon stack of bones, piled up high.

Many more of those ossuaria exist, some containing massive numbers of remains.
