AKObserver User ID: 21546479 United States 03/23/2014 11:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yep...This just out for Alaska Shelling out clam limits — Low abundance results in lower harvest, area closed to clamming During spring surveys conducted in 2011 from the Ninilchik River north 3.2 miles, the numbers of clams found was well within historic rates of abundance, and the numbers from Deep Creek to the Ninilchik River were about twice the number of the 2005 estimate of 2.5 million clams, she said. However, not long afterward, the clam population began to decline. Studies conducted in the same areas in 2012 revealed a 50 percent decline in population, followed in 2013 by a 95 percent decline from the 2011 survey numbers. The 2013 estimate of 79,000 razor clams was the lowest abundance recorded since the surveys began in the 1990s. “Since the abundance of sexually mature clams in 2013 was at a record low and effort did not shift from the Ninilchik beach, this beach will be closed to the harvest of clams. It cannot be stopped because it's already out there; changing the ecology. Look for a plague of mutations among the very few flora and fauna of the sea that remain alive. It's going to get especially bad on the West Coast because of jellyfish. Too simple to be as affected by radiation as more complex life, and without the competition or predators as before, they will increase many times in numbers and make the shore waters impossible to swim. |

Yes it's real sad, I have been doing what I can since 1999 when I shut down my marine aquarium shop and started a non-profit coral reef conservation organization to do what I could to make a difference. The coral reefs are dying. It's really sad seeing them disappear and algae taking over. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53352621 They are looking for food and there is none. They are also excaping and moving into the area's that the radiation has not yet hit but I think they are out of room now as it has hit. Remember all the Sea Lions and Seals found starving and dead all over the beaches last year. Actually all up and down the Coast lines. All the mass dieoffs of fish and whales beached everywhere. Then there was that story " The Pacific Ocean is Broken " on yahoo about a sailor that sailed 3000 nautical miles and saw nothing living. Caught 3 fish and saw 1 whale turning in the ocean with a tumor on its head. This is just like the Honey Bee. When they all die we die within years and this will be the same with the Ocean. Many of us may not eat food provided by the Oceans but there is a huge percentage of this World that does. This will have catastophic effects Worldwide. |
