none other than Al Gore quashed a Congressional investigation into Florida's shenanigans - the American Dream died.

on 9-11 that Dream mutated into quasi-religious Fantasy - the fantasy of saving the world from evil.
the fantasy of our own innocence & moral purity. the fantasy of American invincibility, "American Idol", everyone can be a celebrity, the fantasy of eternally prosperous capitalism.

and what does the Fantasy mutate into?
