I think it has more to do with the political and economic power of the nuclear power industry in the US than anything else.

Does the international community need to somehow offer help to demand that the Japanese government allow them in to see what is going on? You are so right. Look at how many people are still ignorant of the existence of Fukishima and don't even realize it's significance. I talk to people all the time about Fukishima and they always give me a blank look and then kind of shrug their shoulders.
