If you map out his bearings it looks like it was roughly consistent with where they are searching now. This was way back when they were all still looking in the South China Sea and the U-turn had not been mentioned. So that would have been one hell of a hoax, to cite the plane bearing way off of where everybody originally thought it was. He also claims it was already on fire when he saw it.
