I say we head north and west into northern Oregon or southern Washington.
He says the only way to survive is to head to the southern hemisphere. I really don't want to mess with those countries in a time of crisis. Not that I expect help from US government during a catastrophe.

HELP! I need your .02 worth!

The jet stream is going to blow the bulk of the ash fall to the east. You don't want to be downwind to the east of the super-volcano.
 Quoting: fishingnut

If this thing let's rip in a worst case scenario, it will eject stuff into space... which will then re-enter the atmosphere. I think the ash is a secondary concern...

Unless Dr. Phil is there to keep these giant ego's from slaughtering each other after the elites congratulate themselves on being so special, I think Moochelle will dominate the colony after a year making them all wish they had taken a hot shower under Old Faithful.

It all depends on big it goes poot. It has done so few time in the past: [link to blogs.survivalistssite.com]

Range can vary on immediate effects, but long time effects: bundle up because everything will be screwed.

That is why gov and mil are preparing dumb's because if anything does happen like this (or asteroid or anything else global) they will be prepared to survive in comfort and we the people...not a pleasant thought.

Just be informed and make the best choice...but do as a team. Balance out all the pros and cons and decide from there.

Good luck.

Nuke plants will go belly up. Electricity will end and what Yellowstone ash doesn't destroy rads will. Your best bet is underwater or geosync orbit to survive physically otherwise get holy as you can and your transition will be smooth.

Last time I looked at a blast map I was 10K outside the certain death zone. That means my injuries would mean I suffered for 6 months and then died,

or I could load up the car with some beer and hot-dogs and drive towards it to the nearest horizon and sit back and watch the show. Running away only makes sense if you can run more than a few blocks.

i think it's harmonic activity, caused by something called 'bubble collapse' within these geysers

OF is the only chart showing it too, so it's highly localised to there

Cute!

I am sure that we are not the only ones that will be disagreeing about this. We are just "pre-arguing" so that if it does happen we have a plan. I think the consensus is to stay put ... We are still in negotiations about our plans...

Please keep giving me your thoughts everyone! It is fascinating, I wish I knew how to make a poll?

Have you thought of drawing straws and sticking to it with NO complaints???hf

If it really happens going south makes the best sense as nuclear winter will be slower if at all down there. Go to Ecuador. Or over to Russia since they have hide outs over there.

South. New Mexico or West Texas. Maybe even Arizona. North west is a very active seismic area. You'd be going into the fire there.

Stay safe.

Wizard's Rule #1: "People are stupid. Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. People will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
Primordial Rule: "The rule unwritten. It is the secret of all life. It is the essence of life itself. You are a creator and master of your own reality. You ultimately make your own rules."

To give you an idea, I was living on Whidbey Island when Mt. St. Helens blew. It's about 200 mi due north of MSH in Puget Sound. We got no ash, but in Eastern Washington as far as Spokane they had to use snowplows to clear the roads. I'd probably go back home to the Flathead Valley in MT. It's about 350 mi NW of Yellowstone.

THAT is what you need to work on. It will be a dynamic situation. Plan to change your plans.

OP, why lock yourself into only one option? Get passports and an RV. Passports let you go to South America, Canada, and about 100 other countries you can travel to visa-free, and an RV lets you stay in a variety of places within the North American continent. Unfortunately in both situations you'll be a refugee, so you can also buy some cheap property in upper Canada AND Mexico to go either place.

Ideally though you'll want to be in some kind of community beforehand, so in our ideal we'd live in Mex during the winter, Canada during the summer, growing food in each place, getting to know the locals. That'd require working from home and we're not there yet. With a passport I can stay in either country for six months, making travelling back-and-forth an interesting option.

I think you may be underestimating the catastrophic societal collapse that would occur immediately following such an eruption. You wouldn't need a passport, you would need a 50 caliber machine gun. An RV? no, more like a tank. Locals who are friendly during current times will use their garden hoe to club you in the head to get your stuff. Any thought that you could survive out on the road is delusional. If this couple gets in their car immediately and starts driving, they might have six hours before the violence begins and only because most people would be in a state of shock.

My opinion: go South or West. South being the better of the two. You cannot proceed East for obvious reasons: wind and jet stream. West is unavailing due to fault lines. So, take Hubby's advice. He's right.
