Quoting: RightMama He says the only way to survive is to head to the southern hemisphere. I really don't want to mess with those countries in a time of crisis. Not that I expect help from US government during a catastrophe. HELP! I need your .02 worth! What is your opinion? The jet stream is going to blow the bulk of the ash fall to the east. You don't want to be downwind to the east of the super-volcano. If this thing let's rip in a worst case scenario, it will eject stuff into space... which will then re-enter the atmosphere. I think the ash is a secondary concern... |

That is why gov and mil are preparing dumb's because if anything does happen like this (or asteroid or anything else global) they will be prepared to survive in comfort and we the people...not a pleasant thought. Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. People will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. We got no ash, but in Eastern Washington as far as Spokane they had to use snowplows to clear the roads. I'd probably go back home to the Flathead Valley in MT. It's about 350 mi NW of Yellowstone. |

Huge fight with husband please give input! Ideally though you'll want to be in some kind of community beforehand, so in our ideal we'd live in Mex during the winter, Canada during the summer, growing food in each place, getting to know the locals. That'd require working from home and we're not there yet. With a passport I can stay in either country for six months, making travelling back-and-forth an interesting option. |

Huge fight with husband please give input! OP, why lock yourself into only one option? Get passports and an RV. Passports let you go to South America, Canada, and about 100 other countries you can travel to visa-free, and an RV lets you stay in a variety of places within the North American continent. Unfortunately in both situations you'll be a refugee, so you can also buy some cheap property in upper Canada AND Mexico to go either place. I think you may be underestimating the catastrophic societal collapse that would occur immediately following such an eruption. You wouldn't need a passport, you would need a 50 caliber machine gun. An RV? no, more like a tank. Locals who are friendly during current times will use their garden hoe to club you in the head to get your stuff. Any thought that you could survive out on the road is delusional. If this couple gets in their car immediately and starts driving, they might have six hours before the violence begins and only because most people would be in a state of shock. |
