Frustrated Dad writes note in response to Common Core Math problem - awesome! =)
Here's the note:
“Don’t feel bad. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering which included extensive study in differential equations and other higher math applications. Even I cannot explain the Common Core mathematics approach, nor get the answer correct. In the real world, simplification is valued over complication. Therefore, 427 – 316 = 111”

You should see my child's kindergarten math homework. This core standard shit is bogus! They have about two days to spend on any one subject. If you don't get it, too bad! We have no time to help your child. We have so much stuff to cram down their throats we just don't have the time to help..... Sry

Apparently you are supposed to find the error and write how "Jack" came to the wrong answer, 121, and show how the correct answer is 111. The math isn't as important as the process and is supposed to encourage the student to express himself.

I like to joke about the old way mathematics was taught:

If Sally has 3 apples and Johny has 3 apples and an orange, what color are the 6 watermelons Jack has hidden in his desk?

I get what the problem is asking. My issue, however, is how teacher will mark a student down for "not showing work", even if they have the right answer. My oldest is like my husband - can do a lot in his head, gets the right answers, but has trouble showing it exactly how the teacher wants it shown. It's crap to mark points off for that.

If anything the system goal should be to discover what a student's passion is and then taylor their education around that. Start that process earlier and the need for a college education, or the amount of time and money needed to be spent on college would be much less. Knock the basics out then get them going on something they want to do.

Obviously my idea doesn't start in the 2nd grade but it should definitely be in the high school arena. Teach math, read the literary classics, learn some grammar, some science, sociology, and history, then get working on what you love. That should be the focus instead of training kids in government mandated "facts" using a government mandated method, so they can go to a college and get enslaved into government owned debt to go get a boring job they hate for 15 years to pay off that debt.

Terrible enslavement cycle we've created.

What can you do??? Part of the problem is that parents have wholly passed their kids off to the government schools and then act dumbfounded and complain. It is not the governments job to raise and educate your kids. Get them out! That's what you can do.

That was pretty low AC even for this forum! Not only that, your comment about the army was really uncalled for. Many of our children join the army to get money for college because neither they nor their parents can afford it. Many of these "D" students complete their college as well! I happened to know a few and they are very, very bright.

Even speaking with my child's teacher. She also agreed that she doesn't have enough time to spend on a subject before she has to move on. She says they don't demand she move so quickly, but there is so much stuff to go thru that she has to move quickly. Granted my son is only in kindergarten. I'm just lost to the fact that the childrens test scores are the only thing that the school department knows. They don't care that they can't focus from all the stuff being jammed down their throats.
The teacher spend one week on a bunch of problems and subjects. Then gives a test! After the test no matter how the child has scored, they move on. She told me she is worried because they will be expected to know all these things going into 1st grade.
Not making excuses for the kids. Yes, some of them are subject to shity parents. Most are encouraged at home, but it's just not enough sometimes.
