I'll have to wait another month still snowing here.

I will be planting many healing herbs for myself and neighbors.

What is a Healing Herb Garden?

A healing herb garden provides stress relief and relaxation through sensory stimulation or by providing herbs for use in medicinal teas, tinctures and external compresses. You can organize herbs in a healing garden by effect or appearance.

Nice Garden,

The thing I like best where I live is I can keep the garden growing year around. Darn Bugs however are a PITA here but I'm keeping them in check and doing it with Organic pesticides.

Hydroponic and container gardening helps keeps the ants at bay. I use natural soaps, spinosad and neem oil for the bugs.

here is a picture of my strawberry tables, I'm located 14 deg south of the Equator (Tropical Climate).

Wow your plants look great! Thanks for the gardening tips in the sandy soil!!
Oh, and I sent ya email the other day. Not sure if you got it or not.

OP, you really out did yourself on the garden!! Lush and large! I only wish I had that much space, or that much rich dirt!!

Keep posting tips please!!

(so far I have carrots, radishes, peas, and some giant sunflowers. I also planted some celery from scrap, and it DID start to come out already!!)

I also want to do tomatoes, bell pepper, and hopefully I will have room for a squash or two!

Thanks so much!

My plan is to get some string beans in tomorrow and maybe some peas. However my Chickens may end up eating half of the garden before it gets up enough. I sure hope they don't but lately I have noticed they enjoy picking at what I have already planted, so I am sure I will lose about 1/2 of what I plant. I don't mind them eating the bugs, I just don't like them eating the plants.

How hard was it to get your FDA authorization authority to grow your gardens?

I was thinking of growing some turnips later this fall.

Re: Start Your Own Garden! It is Spring Time! >>Pics of Last Sping's Garden inside!<<
Here's a question. Along with expanding my garden to double it's size from last season, I have access to a large, non-working hot tub. Should I take the hot tub, and if so what should I do with it?

I was leaning toward possibly setting up and attempting to farm some trout. Does anyone know much about doing so? I've been trying to browse the web for information but really haven't found much luck on details.

If not the fish farm idea, what else could I make use of the tub, or should I just take it to the dump?
 Quoting: BlurryIce 10594616

Why isn't it working? Is it cracked? If you're going to try trout you need to have really good, vigorous water circulation and the water needs to be fairly cold. If it is cracked (and it's mendable), maybe you could bury it and make a pond out of it. Goldfish will do nicely and will even survive the winter if the pond is deep enough.

Otherwise, maybe you could fill it with really good dirt for a little garden, or a worm farm.
 Quoting: Eggcellent

It isn't working because the pipes inside leak so my neighbor is planning on just getting rid of it. (not worth fixing) So I figured, I could always patch the jet holes in the tub, bury it partially and give it a go. I'm looking to farm fish that I could down the road eat, so goldfish are out of the question. The cold water shouldn't be a problem because the section of yard I plan on using is in steady shade. Along with that, I have a fairly strong water pump that could be used. I would however, consider getting a solar panel to power the pump on a regular basis. Thoughts?

there is no regulations, you can grow one in the city as well if you own the property. The regulations come if your building a greenhouse, a structure or something of that nature. Out here in the sticks we don't even have to worry about that.

What can I use to keep the tomato hornworms away?? Every year, they decimate my plants, an the organic stuff doesn't do a darn thing to keep them away. I'll try anything this year! HELP!!

Introduce braconid wasp's to your garden, they will clear them out.
 Quoting: Kamindaki

I think these insect forms of control would really work.

The emerald ash borer has decimated tens of millions of ash trees, yet it existed in Asia for thousands of years. It was the prey of a certain kind of wasp there that kept them in check.

They should be breeding those wasps and spreading them all over, but maybe they are just afraid. I think they would naturally hone in on their accustomed prey like always.

Certain wasps just go for certain types of prey.

I had an infestation of cicadas that was eating the roots of plants, damaging the roots of trees and none of the insecticides worked but the cicada killer wasps completely wiped them out within a week or two. It was like an watching a giant ww2 dogfight, watching the wasps take them right out of the sky in mid flight, drop to the ground and bury them in their holes.

Good Job! An Herb Garden is a great way to start! the major thing with herbs is to make sure that they get proper water levels! I only grow two different types of herbs in my garden, so let me know how those come out! I grow mainly Squash, Onion, Lettuce, Parsnip, Rutabagas,Pumpkins, Strawberries, Tomato, Carrots, Green Peas, Snap Peas, Beets, Potatoes, Chive, Corn, Cauliflower, and Turnip.

I would love to graduate to a proper veggie garden, with a long-term hope of having a fully edible/medicinal lawn.
After last nights wicked storms through n. Tx. I am worried. I re-turned the garden soil (I used compostable containers for the germinating process) to loosen and drain it. The area I chose flooded, and a lot of silt came with it (from somewhere?). Any tips?

Texas does get a lot of rain! I would suggest a couple different things. First the positioning of the garden is key, make sure to place your garden on the highest portion of property you can. Plus raise the soil level a little bit so it is a little further above ground than the other parts of your property. Plus make sure you dig water trenches to make sure excess water drains around and out of your garden.

I hope more folks sew this and garden. I am a newbie and I suck at it. I do have a jalapeno plant growing now and I think I got the right soil. Hard to keep track of what each plant needs, the soil, when to plant, how to germinate, keep up watering, when to pick, keeping insects and varmits out, etc. Not giving up... Just understanding the challenges. Gardening has been made to look like its what pussies do... Learning now its what real men do. Great thread op! Hope to see more... There should be a GLP garden growing contest to help inspire.

Just heard that holographic, sequined fabric, cut in strips (3 inches wide/30 inches long, for example, can vary widely)
tie so hanging from fence or row posts, deters many critters.

Fabric would be quiet and can be pretty to look at since it can come in any color, or mix/match.

A bit like the good old scare crow :) Thats actually a good idea I might do with the kids, make a nice looking scarecrow hf

Using that nice fabric, it might looks like a fairy tho chuckle

Thats what I did yesterday :D. My garden plot is small. Behind it those buckets will be cherry tomatoes. On my porch, I have 5 sub-irrigated planters I built. Those are so easy to water, I love them! They have pipe that your pour wter down to the bottom of a two bucket planter and the plant takes in the water it needs.

Finally, I also have 10 2liter hanging bottle planters. Similar to a bottle garden.

Heres a pic of my scarecrow and I hung cd's for the shimmer.

Re: Start Your Own Garden! It is Spring Time! >>Pics of Last Sping's Garden inside!<<
if you have compacted soil you might not have a lot of worms.

If you go out into a field of grass, after a heavy rain and night, the ground is usually covered with nightcrawlers, big worms.

It is an art to catch them, but if you get good at it you can catch a bucketfull in an hour.

As soon as they hear your foot step they will shoot down their holes. worms are fast as hell. If you shine the light on them you have to move fast,if they see the light they will shoot down their holes.

You have to shine the light then jump on them fast.

They are usually leaving a little of their tail in their hole to grab onto so they can zip down the holes, but some venture all the way out, so you can grab those.

Sometimes there are so many you can grab a big handful in one swipe but the are slippery.

You can put your ear to ground and listen, and hear them moving in the ground, that is how you know where there are a lot of them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56297077

My cousin uses this tried and true method she learned from her dad as a little girl to get earthworms. She says take two sticks, hold one on the ground and rub it with the other. She said the vibration makes them come up to the surface. She said it also works to bang on metal. She uses this method for her fishing bait and her garden bed. I havent tried it but she and her dad who is about 79 yers old, always have fabulous gardens. I think I will just go to the bait store and buy me some lol But in a SHTF scenario, this old timey technique could prove useful.
