Guys, what is on the ground??? SNOW

What does Snow do?? MELT

What does it melt into?? WATER

Where does the water go?? UNDERGROUND

What does Yellowstone have?? HYDROTHERMAL FEATURES

CONCLUSION:

Yellowstone has Hydrothermal features which means water underground boils because of the heat source underneath...When it reaches a certain pressure (like a kettle), it blows out steam...

Now, you see the ground covered in Snow, which is slowly melting. Extra water from the melting snow is building up on top of the normal amount of water there usually is. This means there is more water in the system...The more water in the system, the more there is to boil...The more there is to boil, the more steam it will generate....

What you are seeing on that CAM is a complete normal process that Yellowstone does...It just seems more intense because of the fact there is more water entering the ground from the snow....

Chill out, relax and enjoy the wonderful features that Yellowstone gives us....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55823884

Yellowstone's hydrothermal features would not exist without the underlying magma body that releases tremendous heat. They also depend on sources of water, such as from the mountains surrounding the Yellowstone Plateau. There, snow and rain slowly percolate through layers of permeable rock riddled with cracks. Some of this cold water meets hot brine directly heated by the shallow magma body. The water's temperature rises well above the boiling point but the water remains in a liquid state due to the great pressure and weight of the overlying water. The result is superheated water with temperatures exceeding 400°F

Re: YELLOWSTONE UPDATES (2014) : ... Strange things happening @ Yellowstone...
I have visited the park and I have watched this camera many times before. Yellowstone is about 200 miles south of me.

It is steam you are seeing, not smoke. The temperature of the water coming out of those geysers is well over 200*F. The ambient air temperature is currently 36*F so you see lots of steam. Even when it is 70-80*F you see lots of steam.

You are watching Old Faithful. It is called Old Faithful because it faithfully goes off, roughly, every 90 minutes. Seeing multiple geysers steaming at the same time in this area is not unusual.

There are geysers throughout the park so you will see steam rise in the background/tree line.

The camera you are watching has always panned back and forth. During daylight hours there is someone operating it to provide the best view for people watching and during tourist season the operator can keep an eye out to make sure tourists don't venture off the designated paths and put themselves in more danger than they are already in standing in the caldera of the largest volcano in the world.

The camera is mounted to a tree and does sway back and forth. You should see how much it sways when it is really windy.

Please excuse my ignorance if this has been posted already...but, isn't this normal for Yellowstone to vent like this? Or, is it being more active then usual?
 Quoting: katballoo

most of these people have been watching this cam for all of....A DAY. so I don't think they are an authority on whether this is more active than usual. for all they really know, this could be a decrease in activity.

That picture is showing mostly steam, since it was not very windy today and heat rises it appears much larger than it really is. The actual plume of liquid water is not as large as that picture shows.

If you want to see the largest geyser in the park you will want to look at Steamboat. When it has violent eruptions it can shoot liquid water up to 300' feet in the air. See link below.

For what it's worth, two of us have been watching for 3 days now, along with the associated seismo, and the seismo for L.A. We also noted that, for sure, the place goes well crazy with every quake. That we took for granted, been trying to work out why now is all.

Also, today is the first day of no bison, camera was well interested in the bison yesterday though, and there have been lot's of bison around the last few days....

Was thinking that myself - but still, it was amazing to watch. I do think a lot more geothermal eruptions are happening because of snow melt but also, there is a possibility that the seismic pinging going on is helping it too - in some way.
