Unfortunately, IQ is not the true gauge of someones intellect. I am a Southerner and fully understand the ramifications of what happened during the Civil War and wish all Americans truly understood what the South stood for. It had nothing to do with slavery, which I abhor, but all about keeping us ALL out of slavery which we are ALL under today. BTW...I tested out as a genius at an early age and was put through all of the mind game crap through my early years in California, Texas and Florida. |

Rugged individualists? Men who loved freedom? Not any more. Absent the 2nd Amendment, most purblind southerners could not recite any other in the Bill of Rights. It's a shame and disgrace where the South has gone: to hell. Judges down here are the 2nd prosecutor. Quoting: Elsabiades.. Judges everywhere are the second prosecutor, but yeah you're right |

We are all born into captivity of our parents and some state. Both can compel us to work. Both can limit our freedom. Neither require our consent. Unfortunately you can't have a meaningful conversation on the issue because people are illogical and uneducated about the facts of slavery. For instance almost everyone will immediately complain about the cruelty of whippings and the punishment for desertion. But when you bring up the fact the US Army continued to use whippings as a punishment long after slavery ended and still can execute those who desert people just respond, 'you cannot make slavery sound good, it was evil'. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1595319 United States 04/04/2014 09:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Great thread... yeah, SOME blacks may have been mistreated- but the vast majority would have been housed, clothed, fed, and had medical attention when needed. They were investments and needed to be taken care of. Lot's and lot's of them were looked upon as extended family to the white owners. I'll leave you with this though... I was doing some research in the Hamilton County Courthouse in TX one day. They had old relics- old journal entries, old hand tools, old things from the earliest pioneers that migrated to TX. One of the relics was a really old letter written by a man that was sort of a 'scout' for others in places like AR, TN, KY, etc. In his letter he was writing to describe TX soil types/conditions, weather, indian trouble, water sources, etc. He also refers to another man that decided to come with him to TX that brought his slave with him too. When referring to them he states, "Jim also is here with me. He brought along his n3gro. It has been hard work bringing in a small test crop, and even harder getting the n3gro to do any work, but we all know how that is." |

We'd be like Islam in Iran... severe persecution of anyone who feels differently. Hell, we might even still be burning people at stakes for being different. Plus, the opinion of slavery here is mildly disturbing. If it wasn't for the welfare system, you should leave these people to their own devices, not enslave them. If you want to make an agreement to take care of someone, as far as food shelter and medical care, for them to dedicate themselves to you, that's okay... but that's not slavery. Slavery is generally forcing someone to serve, against their will. If you believe in that, then you cannot call yourself an American if you believe the concept is 'land of the free'. I'll gladly take the guns though... Sadly, it doesn't mean it would have been anymore likely to succeed than what we already have. We were already guaranteed guns, and look at what's happening with that. |

If you believe in that, then you cannot call yourself an American if you believe the concept is 'land of the free'. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55734279 All definitions of slavery I encounter make lots of other institutions immoral. Your definition forcing someone to serve is what parents do and what governments do. I'd also point out that according to your definition someone could be an owned slave but not be in slavery. If a slave actually wanted to serve their master then they would not be in slavery. A typical reaction to that is that such a state is impossible. But that ignores the success of Christianity in teaching slaves to obey their masters. This does not mean all slaves wanted to serve, but some did. I think a better definition of slavery is that one man has the right to another man's labor. And by that definition slavery abounds today. For instance in the US someone who doesn't want to work has a right to my labor received through various welfare programs. The proponents of welfare are quite clear that a positive right exists whereby the state should justly take from one man to give to another because the recipient is justly entitled to the labor. Also parents can compel their children to work for them. The state can compel you in military service and increasingly other ways to work for them. Personally I don't care about whether I'm an American or not. America today is a rather disgusting nation. But 'land of the free' never meant unfettered freedom. The founders of the US weren't so dense as to not realize a contradiction in slavery and the principles of the US. I think there were questions of how one entered into slavery. Kidnapping and being born into slavery are difficulties. Then again children are born into all sorts of terrible circumstances whether it be family or nation. If you go to far in rejecting principles of or supporting slavery you end up with the modern nation state which exists to promote radical equality. That system has plenty of problems as we can see. |
