What would be easier - (1) hijacking an actual airliner either as an inside job using the pilots or remotely using advanced tools of technological warfare, or (2) claiming a plane disappeared that never existed in the first place?

If you're someone who believes the plane is going to re-surface as a weapon of war, i.e. a nuke strike, hijacking an actual plane presents way too many complications. Easier to just say it existed when in fact it never did. Then let news outlets like CNN run the propaganda machine.
