Top 10 vegetables you can grow in the shade!
Top 10 vegetables you can grow in the shade

Think you need full sun to grow a vegetable garden? Good news: there are a lot of veggies that actually do better with some shade. They will not grow in dense shade, but if you have areas that get some sunshine each day, you're in luck! The strongest sun is in the afternoon. If your garden bed gets morning sun, the veggies will need a little more time.

Re: Top 10 vegetables you can grow in the shade!
Good info, OP! (I love your name, btw!) Not meaning to brag, but I have all of that and more already planted! [Pats self on back - I'm about a month and a half ahead of last year!!] Our weather has already been hitting the 80's, and we have quite a few veggies already up or transplanted from the greenhouse. In fact, we are due to hit the 90's next week, so much of what is in the greenhouse will have to come out or it will be burned up.

We used an old box springs that had been discarded, cut off the bottom fabric and turned it upside down, filled it with dirt and compost, and planted a "salad bed" - mesclun mix, onions, peppers, lettuce and spinach!

I bought one of those door-hanging shoe storage things...the kind with roomy pockets for the shoes...and plan to hang it on the fence out back and plant herbs in it. Saw that a few years ago online, and decided to try it.

With all the predicted food shortages, and the sharp increase in prices, it would be a good idea for everyone to try their hand at gardening. Whether you add edibles in a flower bed, or use containers on a small patio, everyone can extend their food source with small expense and a little labor! For drought areas, there are some good ideas for saving 'used' water for use in the garden.

Thanks again, Ms. Superduper! Great post! Hope lots of other folks contribute ideas as well. Good gardening, everyone!!

Awesome stuff. Not that I have much shaded areas at my house but I am planning a veggie garden. The link is very good because I enjoy most of those veggies.

The I will have my fruit patch with watermelons, passionfruit, bananas, tomatoes and a lemon trees.

From my last 3 whole years experience, lol, use the miracle gro fertilizer 3 times during the grow season, minimum. Only did 2 times last year due to lack of time, and I was disappointed with the yields.

I have plenty of that, and use the miracle gro for ease of application. Mainly because you can't hurt it with miracle gor, like you can with dry fertilizer. I also farm, and have that too. My manure has weeds also.

Re: Top 10 vegetables you can grow in the shade!
We've had small gardens for most of the 40 years we've been married, but in the last 4 years, I've gotten VERY ambitious about growing veggies. I've got more of a small "truck farm" now, as they say in the south. I'm still learning about corn and strawberries, but have done pretty well with most everything else. Had more okra last year than we knew what to do with! The plants were 10+ feet tall and about 3" thick! More like trees! lol

I have 2 large compost piles, and 21 chickens. I add the wood shavings/poop from their house in the compost piles. Once it heats up to temp, the chicken manure is perfectly safe to use. I'll still use organic fertilizer during the season. Hubby likes to use Miracle Gro. But we don't use much pesticides. In fact, I'll be planting marigolds around my tomato plants as a natural pest deterrent.

OIC. I'm sure you are far more savvy at growing than I am. I have little experience, no real yard of my own, and not full sun.

I'm going to give some of these veggies a try though. If the squirrels try to get the veg. plants, well we'll just have to have some squirrel soup. Heh.

Re: Top 10 vegetables you can grow in the shade!
Here's what I have already quite by accident, sort of.

A pineapple plant (from a pineapple I bought a couple of years ago. (I just stuck it in some water for a while and then stuck it in some dirt outside.) It's pretty big but no fruit yet.

A pot of mint.

Some aloe.

Celery (from a stalk I bought).

Green pepper plants.

I've got some seeds of flowers and spinach and pole beans. I'm just gonna throw those out in some organic soil I deposited out front and see what happens.

It does seem that the more attention I pay to any plant, the worse it does. When I just stick it in the ground and let it be, it does better. Kind of like a 'let go and let God' thing.

I had some celery growing from stalks I bought, but I moved the container out to the patio and let them die. :-( I did successfully grow green onions from the ends of ones I bought. And got those transplanted successfully. I would like to try the pineapple! Pretty dry here in W TX, though.

I planted grape vines this year, and have some blueberry stock to plant. Haven't had much luck with those so far, but we had a huge grape vine at our last house.

We planted an asparagus bed this year for the first time. Hope it does well since I love asparagus! But won't get fruit til next year.

Successfully grew eggplant last year, but they didn't get very big. Were very tasty, though.

Aside from the usual veggies, like tomatoes and squash, I am enjoying experimenting with new ones. We'll see which ones do well enough to plant again next year! Some years, I really wish my veggies would do as well as my weeds! Some of which, like dandelion, are very edible!!

The pineapple plant did very well. I totally ignored it outside in a pot. lol. Needs good drainage.

drainage should be ok. What about humidity and moisture? And heat? Wonder if it would do better in the greenhouse? But that will soon get way too hot, I think.

It gets pretty hot in FL and this plant is a couple of years old so it's been through it with little watering from me - just whenever it rains it gets water. We do have some humidity here though - that's the tough part about our summers - hard to breathe.

I have been to TX in July - there sure is a difference in humidity.

I have planted 3 different kinds of cherries. Bali Cherry, which is a tree, Canada Red Cherry which is more of a shrub, and Nanking Cherry which is suppose to get to 10 feet. Anyway, they have been in for 3 seasons, and last year, the birds ate them all!!! LOL My first good crop too! (Not that good, but had a couple hundred cherries.
I also have 4 grape vines planted and really got some clusters this year, when I went to pick them, the birds got them too!!! This year I will rig up netting to protect them from the predators!!!
The Bali Cherry are nice, about the size of your thumbnail, of course I am in Montana, so they are probably much larger other places.
