Natural Flea Killer?

My mom used to use garlic powder and our pets never had fleas...might want to research it!

Walnut branches and Hedgerow apples. Both repel and kill (mainly repel as they aren't stupid enough to eat them).


Have a basement? Just drop a couple branches somewhere out of the way.

put brewer's yeast or beer yeast in their food.....fleas go away....plus, it's good for their fur etc...

You could lather them up with mayonaise........Seriously, if the kitty starts licking it off, it will not hurt the little ones and then the mayonaise will smother the fleas in oil from the Mayo.

Then wash the little ones in the sink using Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo.

I just bought some brewer's yeast and garlic tablets, and an herbal flea collar from Petguard.

Once you have an infestation it's hard for the natural methods to kill the colony.

I know you don't want to use the toxic stuff, but we use Revolution even on our exotics with great results.

Killing the egg to adult cycle is the key to flea control. Be sure to vac your carpets and treat the bedding areas with a topical also.

Hmm, mayonnaise? I haven't heard of that remedy! I'll try it! We already bathed him in J&J shampoo and got a lot of the little devils. I hate fleas!

The other cat goes outside -- so it may be a losing battle. There's no way to keep her indoors. She goes insane.

Soak a collar or string in Pennyroyal essential oil and put it around your cats neck.

I've also had excellent results using Bach's Crab Apple flower essence, both as a spray in water for the house and the cats. A few drops in their drinking water and put a few drops between your hands and rub them together, then pet your cat all over. I swear this works.

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the outside of your house and anywhere the kitties spend time. You can also sprinkle it directly on them and then brush them. I would use a nose filter and goggles so it doesn't get in your eyes and nose.

Also, there's this common weed that's out in flower now called fleabane,,, it looks like spindley minature daisies. The juice is said to repel fleas (never tried it myself though) and I imagine some of the dried flowers and foliage sprinked around might help. Hey, make a bouquet of them for the house. Can't hurt to try it.

How do I use the apples? Just put them around the house? Where do I get them?

To person who spoke of the brewers/beer yeast remedy: is this effective for dogs? Are you sure its safe? Last year on this very forum someone suggested apple cider vinegar for the treatment of fleas. I sprayed my dog very well with this as suggested. A few days later she had a very severe skin yeast infection that resulted in a high vet bill and could have cost her life. I`m almost positive this "natural"remedy was the cause of the skin infection.
Where to you buy the beer yeast and how much would you give to a 50 and 40 pound dog? How often?

Walnut is the best. Apparently both produce a smell/atmosphere unlivable to flee's. Weird, but true. My grandparents had this house dog and the house/dog both were riddled with flee's. So bad, if you walked across the floor you would have 10+ on your socks.

1-2 days after placeing the branches in the basement, wallah. : )


To my knowledge you can't buy hedge tree apples (no, you can't and shouldn't eat them). In the area I am in, they're abundent on farm land. They normally grow along fence rows.

I almost gave up owning animals because of fleas before I found 'ZODIAC' flea spray. I couldn't stand putting chemicals on my animals, so I thought best not to have them.

Well, found this spray that works for no lie about 250 days!!!!!!!

I sprayed it on my carpets and whereever the cats/dogs would go and bam~! Gone, every stage of the lifecycle.

I do now use frontline in between the shoulder blades primarily for the TICKS, get lots of them at the shorehouse...I would find them immediately after a walk around the neighborhood! yuk...

anyway, haven't had much trouble at home, have fenced in yard.

ZODIAC flea spray is the best for furniture and carpets. I never sprayed it on my animals.

I thought that's what you meant. Dogs can tolerate things that cats can't and visa versa. Be careful as the Osage Orange has long been listed on the toxic to kitty plant list no matter what you've heard.

Brewer's yeast is commonly used for flea problems in dogs. Not sure if it's good for cats tho. A vet could probably tell you.

Yeast and garlic are fine in the right quantities.

Beer yeast really worked with my cat. I sprinkled it on her food.

... sure works for my doggie and two kitties... and they have their own door for to come and go as they may please to boot.

Sorry - I tried everything before I finally broke down and got the stuff from the vet you have to put on the back of the cats neck one a month or so.

I swear I tried everything, what I ended up with is a house infested with fleas that I had to use chemicals to get rid of - repeatedly.

Flea eggs can incubate and hatch in favourable conditions..it was a huge mess and a disaster.

Just get the neck stuff and save yourself a ton of grief.

There are several brands: FleaGO, Flea Stoppers...

We have 4 dogs and a cat and this has prevented any sign of fleas ...it lasts for a year in your carpet(read how to apply) safe for dogs and babies any age...
We have done thin in 4 residences over the last 8 years and are very pleased.

To help relieve the animals brewers yeast and a littel garlic powher internally will make them unappealing when they are 'attacked' but the powder in the carpet will end the reighn of the fleas 'overnight'.

The powder that is sold esp for fleas is very fine and gets down into the fibers where the larvae are hatched
For safety's sake we spread the boric acid when the animals are out and the windows are open and 'rake' into carpet, we don't always trust advertisements but we have had the ok from several vets about it and some even sell it. We rake with a black rubber broom...forget what its' called but it works great ...yellow telescoping handle ...sweegee on one side ...noppie rubber 'bristle'
...real tv fame broom....The fleas are always jumping on and off the animals and everything and hatching eggs in the carpet and the powder at the bottom where they hide quickly kill both parents and larvae... you will thank your stars....YAY!

I just buy 20 mule team borax at target or the grocery store for general bug control like in the windowsill and deck.

I tried to tell them 74140...Revolution/Frontline/Advantage are the best for fighting all blood suckers.

Kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and prevents flea eggs from hatching.
Prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis.
Treats and controls ear mites (Otodectes cynotis).
Treats and controls roundworms (Toxocara cati) and hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme).

Been doing the kitty thing for almost 30 years including the BIG ONES. This stuff was a Godsend in the late 90's.

Once you have the population under control, then you might try the natural methods.

Side Note: Never use the Hartz brand collars or topicals on anything you love ;(

whats always worked for my pets - from your local food coop or health food store - dr. bronners magic soaps
eucalyptus oil soap.
put a small amount, maybe 1/20 - 1/10 of bottle, of eucalyptus oil soap in bottle, fill with water. spray. can be used on all types of critters to get rid of the littler critters and it is biodegradable soap and it works as a mosquito spray also. magical stuff.
