The Deputy approached the front of the residence while the trooper and Surf City officer approached the rear of the residence. The trooper observed three male subjects sitting inside the residence and immediately gave loud verbal commands announcing law enforcement’s presence and to comply with all further requests. A male subject, later identified as Maynard Thomas, 67, of Hampstead, reached for and pointed a weapon in the immediate direction of the trooper. The trooper discharged his weapon, striking Mr. Thomas. As a result, Mr. Thomas died at the scene. If you hear any yelling, remember to go to the door unarmed. Yet more bullsheit. Cops acting like thugs on private property... it's inexcusable. This dude just comitted a crime (hit and run, the car was registered in his name). He had good reason to believe that the knock on the door was the cops and not an intruder. And at least in the article they make it sound like shots were already fired before the trooper shot him, so the trooper had good reason to be on edge. Not all cops are bad guys, sometimes they really are justified in shooting in self defense. That being said, I'm sure if the cops had gone to the wrong house, they would have shot him anyways and probably his dogs too. |

He probably knew they were coming and decided to continue being a dumbass. Quoting: Baroness His hit and run vehicle was on the scene. I feel no pity for him. The "hit and run" story varies somewhat: [link to www.wwaytv3.com] They say before Thomas was killed, he was driving his golf cart around a dirt pile and accidentally crashed into his neighbor’s garage. "He was out playing on his golf cart, doing stuff he shouldn't be doing,” said Hannah Royal. Royal says neighbors then called police and Thomas went back to his house to be with friends. About an hour later, they say police showed up. David says the Highway Patrol, Pender County Sheriff's Office, and Surf City Police Department were all on scene at the time of the incident. Witnesses say officers crept on them. “I had a neighbor who said he saw them shut their lights off coming right up the road,” said Watkins. Thomas’ loved ones say the Vietnam veteran had a heart of gold, but he had a problem with people stealing from him. They say because this was a reoccurring issue he kept a shotgun loaded with bird shot handy. "He said if he ever had to use it on someone, he wouldn't want to kill him," said Watkins. A veteran. A gun. Police. |
