Lions on the rampage

Story by HUSSEIN ABDULLAHI
Publication Date: 06/20/2006

In this file picture, the lionesses may appear harmless, but when Somali militia kidnapped three cubs recently, the beasts unleashed terror,
killing three Kenyans and injuring two.
At least three villagers and 30 goats were killed
yesterday when a pride of lions attacked a manyatta at
dawn.
The latest attacks by the marauding lions in Garissa
District brings the death toll to five people in a span
of two weeks. Fifty goats have also been killed.
Councillor Bishar Gurre said 15 lions raided dwellings
in Liboi and Kulan after three cubs went missing. In a
fit of rage, the animals attacked villagers in their
sleep, injuring two others seriously.
Mr Gurre, who is also the Garissa county council
vice-chairman, said about three cubs were snatched from
a lioness by suspected armed militiamen at the Somali
border town of Dobley two weeks ago.
Kenyan herders who witnessed the incident said Somalia
Patriotic Movement (SPM) militiamen based in Dobley,
which lies about 20 kilometres outside the Kenyan
border, took away the cubs in a pick-up while on a
hunting expedition. They had to fire several shots in
the air to ward off the hostile beast that charged at
them.
Several Kenyan herdsmen who crossed to Somalia during
the height of the just-ended drought in search of water
and pasture for their animals streamed back at the
weekend, fearing that the stand-off occasioned by the
stolen cubs would trigger border skirmishes.
Since then, the councillor said, vicious lions had been
besieging settlements and attacking villagers in an
attempt to recover the cubs. He said attempts by Kenya
Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel to retrieve them from
the militiamen had been turned down twice.
Attempts to reach district warden Tom Amisi for comment
had been unsuccessful as he was said to have gone on
transfer, and his replacement was yet to be posted, but
some officers who sought anonymity disclosed that twice,
they travelled to the border locations to negotiate for
the release of the cubs, but abandoned their mission
after the militiamen demanded ransom.
Liboi area chief Abdullahi Rage said since the lions
menace began, more than 10 villagers had been killed by
the beasts after ambushing their victims while herding.
He added that one of the latest casualties was
25-year-old Ismail Aden Ibrahim, who was mauled by the
lions as he fetched water from a well at Kulan
sub-location.
He said several deaths had just been reported. Some
victims were first reported missing while out in the
fields, only for their mutilated and decomposing bodies
to be found later in the thickets by search teams.
He said at one point, villagers had to scamper to safety
and close shops after police officers from Liboi border
police station fired several times in the air to scare
away a pride of lions that had strayed into the town and
were wandering menacingly in the streets.
Earlier, another group of 10 lions surrounded villagers
drawing water at the Liboi water well before wandering
into the police line.
Addressing the Press in Liboi Town, four councillors,
led by Mr Gurre yesterday called on the Government to
protect residents from the marauding lions and
compensate the families of the victims and the injured.

They said the district security committee should
initiate meetings between community leaders from both
sides of the border to secure the release of the
kidnapped cubs and avoid similar raids by angry lions.

Damm, the lions are inteligent, they back away from gun scare, but attack herders, and villagers for revenge.

it appears the lion are saying we will eat all your goats, kill some of you until you return our cab.

it appears the lion also stay away from villages on their own accord.

it also strange how the lions they have banded together for retaliation.

jezz, animals are concious.

sabotaging. The word originates in the word 'sabot' which was a sort of wooden clog. Workers threw their sabots into machinery one time to disrupt production of whatever it was producing and so the word 'sabotaging' was born. Or so the story goes.
