The same reason why Jesus is shown to have a giant phallus on many of thecrucifixs, it started as an pagan joke on Christians.

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
To make a mockery out of Jesus. To turn him into something effeminate, a guy with long hair is the definition of being effeminate.

You do know you're forbidden to make pictures of Jesus?
It's a form of idolatry plus you don't have a physical description of Jesus in the Bible except that he was basically beaten to minced meat by the Romans, which wouldn't be as hot to have as a picture.

Isaiah 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: 15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

Bible is clear about that. This heretical practice started around 300AD and in the beginning it was a short haired guy then later on there's the long hair and girly dresses.
And it's especially the Roman Catholic heathens, the Orthodox heathens and plenty of the Reformed Roman Catholic (Protestants) that do this crap. But then their other doctrines are very contrary to the Bible as well so it's not a surprise heathen groups like those would do that.

Also Jesus wasn't under nazarite vow. Wouldn't be going to any parties if he was, plus wouldn't have disciples. Doesn't say anything about any nazarite vow in the New Testament, you'd think God would have added that part.

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
When the pictures started appearing the artists probably reflected what many men looked like at the time. The fascination of what Jesus looked like goes on all the time as much is written on the subject.

I have heard all kinds of crazy things about men with long hair. It is one of those things you have to ask why do men's hair grow long if that is not natural? Some say short hair came about so as not to embarrass bald men in powerful positions. In WW1 military men were made to cut their hair because of cleanliness as on the battlefield bathing was no always possible (lice was a problem). A lot of things concerning hair are just cultural customs, much like beards on men and female body hair. Long hair on women was favored yet for centuries they were required to cover their hair. Does the cover for female hair have to do with female baldness? Does God really care about fashions?

People have a natural curiosity about what God looks like. Many people need to humanize God in some fashion so pictures and statues developed. To ban all images of a god serves control over cultural dress much as Mao made everyone in China dress a certain way to destroy envy and importance. Man is made in God's image so if we know what God looks like then whomever looks more like God gets favored. So when they began painting pictures of Jesus in Europe they couldn't paint a stereotype Jewish guy and expect everyone to buy into it.

Probably because long hair was all the rage when they started doing paintings and sculptures of him. Who cares? Black Jesus is just as valid too, nobody knows what the dude looked like.

appears to be a theory of a Queer Jewish scholar Leo Steinberg.

But there are sources that indicate Jesus' brother was a Nazirite, at least Church Father Hegesippus describes James the Just having a long hair. I've read speculation that Paul's condemning of long hair had to do with the schism beteween nascent Gentile Pauline Christianity and strict Judaic, xenophobic Jerusalem Church.

Obviously, from the historical point of view, you cannot deduce Jesus' looks from prophecies of Isaiah.

Or from JOhn's apocalyptic visions.

He is a Blasphemy that hangs in homes all around the world mocking Christians.

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
EASY Answer: Women normally wore their hair EXTRY long in the 1st century AD- down to their posterior. What Paul is talking about is a man growing his hair to look as though he were a woman. Having shoulder length not BUTT length hair was the ultra common style for Jewish men in that time and place.

well it's a question... notice the ?

so technically a bible should not have ?

a bible is a reference manual for programs to be used by programers or editors so they know the limits of the program.
To live is to believe in the power of dreams! To dream is to believe in the power of love! To love is to Know the truth!
The Desire to Be fuel the belief that you Are which ignite the Will to Become which bring back forth the desire to be...
Let it be-come you! It means Stop seeking your higher self! It is seeking you! Stand still in your mind to calm the waters of your mind and then it shall find you, so you can ride those waves together!
your true self lies somewhere between your heart and your consciousness. It is called the heart consciousness, which is the creator, which is you!
The heart create the emotions and our mind evoke its purpose, from which we dream the life we live in order to imagine the nature of reality and finally remember love!

The highest Purpose of our mind is the ability to Forget! Go on and Forgive yourself!
There is no love in truth but there is truth in love!
Be authentic, nobody else can do it for you!

The Description of Publius Lentullus

The following was taken from a manuscript in the possession of Lord Kelly, and in his library, and was copied from an original letter of Publius Lentullus at Rome. It being the usual custom of Roman Governors to advertise the Senate and people of such material things as happened in their provinces in the days of Tiberius Caesar, Publius Lentullus, President of Judea, wrote the following epistle to the Senate concerning the Nazarene called Jesus.

"There appeared in these our days a man, of the Jewish Nation, of great virtue, named Yeshua [Jesus], who is yet living among us, and of the Gentiles is accepted for a Prophet of truth, but His own disciples call Him the Son of God- He raiseth the dead and cureth all manner of diseases. A man of stature somewhat tall, and comely, with very reverent countenance, such as the beholders may both love and fear, his hair of (the colour of) the chestnut, full ripe, plain to His ears, whence downwards it is more orient and curling and wavering about His shoulders. In the midst of His head is a seam or partition in His hair, after the manner of the Nazarenes. His forehead plain and very delicate; His face without spot or wrinkle, beautified with a lovely red; His nose and mouth so formed as nothing can be reprehended; His beard thickish, in colour like His hair, not very long, but forked; His look innocent and mature; His eyes grey, clear, and quick- In reproving hypocrisy He is terrible; in admonishing, courteous and fair spoken; pleasant in conversation, mixed with gravity. It cannot be remembered that any have seen Him Laugh, but many have seen Him Weep. In proportion of body, most excellent; His hands and arms delicate to behold. In speaking, very temperate, modest, and wise. A man, for His singular beauty, surpassing the children of men"

"The letter from Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Caesar

This is a reprinting of a letter from Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Caesar describing the physical appearance of Jesus. Copies are in the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C.

TO TIBERIUS CAESAR:

A young man appeared in Galilee preaching with humble unction, a new law in the Name of the God that had sent Him. At first I was apprehensive that His design was to stir up the people against the Romans, but my fears were soon dispelled. Jesus of Nazareth spoke rather as a friend of the Romans than of the Jews. One day I observed in the midst of a group of people a young man who was leaning against a tree, calmly addressing the multitude. I was told it was Jesus. This I could easily have suspected so great was the difference between Him and those who were listening to Him. His golden colored hair and beard gave to his appearance a celestial aspect. He appeared to be about 30 years of age. Never have I seen a sweeter or more serene countenance. What a contrast between Him and His bearers with their black beards and tawny complexions! Unwilling to interrupt Him by my presence, I continued my walk but signified to my secretary to join the group and listen. Later, my secretary reported that never had he seen in the works of all the philosophers anything that compared to the teachings of Jesus. He told me that Jesus was neither seditious nor rebellious, so we extended to Him our protection. He was at liberty to act, to speak, to assemble and to address the people. This unlimited freedom provoked the Jews -- not the poor but the rich and powerful.

Later, I wrote to Jesus requesting an interview with Him at the Praetorium. He came. When the Nazarene made His appearance I was having my morning walk and as I faced Him my feet seemed fastened with an iron hand to the marble pavement and I trembled in every limb as a guilty culprit, though he was calm. For some time I stood admiring this extraordinary Man. There was nothing in Him that was repelling, nor in His character, yet I felt awed in His presence. I told Him that there was a magnetic simplicity about Him and His personality that elevated Him far above the philosophers and teachers of His day.

Now, Noble Sovereign, these are the facts concerning Jesus of Nazareth and I have taken the time to write you in detail concerning these matters. I say that such a man who could convert water into wine, change death into life, disease into health; calm the stormy seas, is not guilty of any criminal offense and as others have said, we must agree -- truly this is the Son of God.

Your most obedient servant,
Pontius Pilate

Your bible is written by stupid men. Jesus however did indeed have longish hair and it was common in those days.

My God, the ignorance on this thread! The OP had a valid question. Man-made long hair laws, that's all I see.

OP, here you have something to start with. Keep researching.

"The Oldest Views and Literary Data on the External Appearance of Jesus"

The Likeness of Jesus

This Likeness of Jesus was copied from a portrait carved on an emerald by order of Tiberius Caesar, which emerald the Emperor of the Turks afterwards gave out of the Treasury of Constantinople to Pope Innocent VIII for the redemption of his brother, taken captive by the Christians."

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
"The Archko Volume"

Another description of Jesus is found in "The Archko Volume" which contains official court documents from the days of Jesus. This information substantiates that He came from racial lines which had blue eyes and golden hair. In a chapter entitled "Gamaliel's Interview" it states concerning Jesus (Yeshua) appearance:

"I asked him to describe this person to me, so that I might know him if I should meet him. He said: 'If you ever meet him [Yeshua] you will know him. While he is nothing but a man, there is something about him that distinguishes him from every other man. He is the picture of his mother, only he has not her smooth, round face. His hair is a little more golden than hers, though it is as much from sunburn as anything else. He is tall, and his shoulders are a little drooped; his visage is thin and of a swarthy complexion, though this is from exposure. His eyes are large and a soft blue, and rather dull and heavy....' This Jew [Nazarite] is convinced that he is the Messiah of the world. ...this was the same person that was born of the virgin in Bethlehem some twenty-six years before..."

- The Archko Volume, translated by Drs. McIntosh and Twyman of the Antiquarian Lodge, Genoa, Italy, from manuscripts in Constantinople and the records of the Senatorial Docket taken from the Vatican of Rome (1896) 92-93

Ask how it is they knew if their preacher was circumcised or not so they would know if his word was true or not, too

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
"Images and Pictures of Jesus

1. The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha.

Neither the New Testament nor the writings of the earlier post-Biblical Christian authors have any statements regarding the personal appearance of Jesus, thus contrasting sharply with the Apocrypha and the Pseudepigrapha and especially with the works of the Gnostics. In the "Shepherd" of Hermas (ix. 6, 12) the lofty stature of the Son of God is emphasized, and according to the Gospel of Peter he even towered above the heaven at his resurrection. Gnostic influence is betrayed by visions in which Christ appears as a shepherd, or the master of a ship, or in the form of one of his apostles, as of Paul and of Thomas, or again as a young boy. In the Acts of Andrew and Matthew he assumes the figure of a lad, and the same form is taken in the Acts of Peter and Andrew, in the Acts of Matthew, and in the Ethiopic Acts of James. Manazara is healed by a youth in the Acts of Thomas, and a beautiful lad appears to Peter and Theon in the Actus Vercellensis, which also mentions the smile of friendship in the face of Jesus. A handsome youth with smiling face appears at the grave of Drusiana in the Acts of John, but certain widows to whom the Lord restored their sight saw him an, aged man of indescribable appearance, though others perceived in him a youth, and others still a boy. The youthfulness of Christ is also mentioned in the life and passion of St. C棩lus and the vision of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas ascribed to the risen Christ the face of a youth with snow-white hair."

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
It was a plan launched several hundred years ago to prepare the world to receive its Anti-Christ. The sodomite curse landed on the western church as a result of gross immorality. 10 generations later, the church is reaping the fruit of that curse.
The American jesus is depicted as a sodomite with long hair as a testimony to why you should not try to makes depictions of God. It fosters confusion.

Re: The Bible says men should not have long hair. Why is Jesus in all the paintings shown with long hair?
It's very clear just by your answer that this particular scripture is taken totally out of context and interrupted with great oversight and error. Jesus Himself, by following Nazarene Law had long hair as a symbol of their vow to God by not cutting their until such vow was completed. Another example, is Sampson who lost his power after he cut his hair. Judges 15.
In fact, it was considered a disgrace for an adult man or priest to cut hair or NOT to have a beard (2 Samuel 10:4-5). Leviticus 19

I can't stress enough that there will always be misunderstanding and false teaching the Bible because too many times the Bible is read verse by verse, omitting the entire passage, the flow of the message in the entire context including history, culture, who, what, why and when.

Without applying these basic principals and background study of what Paul was addressing in that TIME and CULTURE. Men with long hair was associated with prostitution. Lastly, continue to read the scripture in verse 16. Paul is clearing defining the nature of law verse what God thinks. He is correcting the previous verse that is contained in your question.
1Co 11:14 Does not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
1Co 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
1Co 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God
This entire passages were letters/epistles written by Paul, often in response to growing issues at the Church of Corinth. You must apply the history for full understanding of the verse, better yet the entire passage. Often issues such as women to be silent the church. Paul was addressing a lot of issue such as Jewish women that just started going to church as Christians verses the traditions of the Jewish concerning women, also within that group was former pagan worshipers, prostitutes, etc Paul is simply address issues in the Church at that time, No different than many of the current issues we run into today.
@How do we know Jesus had long hair? Because He was a Nazarite. We also can read the prophecy in the book of Isaiah 50:06; as well as, Christ being a rabbi He had a beard.
" I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting." Isaiah 50:06

King James Version

1 Corinthians 13:16 [link to biblehub.com]

13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Why is the typical Jesus shown with long hair?

I need some Bible experts here
 Quoting: RadioactiveMan

The short answer is that Jesus is a fictional, astrological character, an avatar meant to represent an annual celestial event where the 'Three Kings' (the stars in Orion's Belt) point to where the Son (Sun) rises after the shortest day of the year, providing salvation to the world.

Somewhere along the way it got intertwined with the Abrahamic religion and assumed the role of it's foretold messiah.
