Anonymous Coward User ID: 55618316 Canada 04/23/2014 09:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a decent job and am not really looking for another job, but I got a connection to maybe get a great municipal job and figured I'd give it a try. The job is a supervisory position over the maintenance personnel of the city buildings and vehicles as well as street signs and lights. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56933010 I interviewed for the job today after having put an application in almost two months ago. I know the guy a little who interviewed me. He told me he wanted to have the position filled already but that he'd waited 2 months to get just 4 suitable applicants. He said everybody applying had degrees and retail management experience. What he's looking for is somebody who actually knows how to do something. We got to talking about how there is a shortage of people who can actually do shit. I had the same conversation with an elderly painter the other day. I was on a job site with about 7 other men and I was the only one there under 50 years old. What has happened to our society? Why is everybody so damned helpless? They can't change their own oil or paint a dog house or nail together some forms and pour a side walk or even dig a fucking hole for a mailbox post. Sounds like you got the job! Congratulations. You can expect a good pay. Great hours. Benefits. Holidays. Paid stats 3x. And a pension. |

I'm looking to relocate to NC and I was astounded at the amount of decent paying blue collar jobs available. I guess they are having trouble finding young guys willing to get their hands dirty. |

I say, after 25 years on the job, I accomplish more with my pinky toe than you do while working up a sweat. If you knew how to blow your own nose, we could get a much more harmonious outcome! |

I can tell you from experience that white, non hispanic blue collar people get the job done in spite of quadruple level managers, not because of them. |

MostlySunshine User ID: 46299613 United States 04/23/2014 10:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What has happened to our society? Why is everybody so damned helpless? Maybe it's because everyone wants you to have a boat load of experience. I seen a job posting yesterday for a rug washer. They wanted someone with 5 years experience. Maybe they should train someone. I would love to have a different job but no one is willing to train. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone...ain't no borderline psychotic emotional outbursts either. Some days you just have to create your own sunshine. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 57257947 Canada 04/23/2014 10:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nobody wants to hire kids anymore. They're all on dope, can't maintain a working pace, so dummed down you have to show them how to use the shitter. You're not the first person I've heard that from. I did a church car wash once with the kids from the youth group. I had to show them even the most obvious things, like start at one end and work your way to the other. I watched them do the first car, it was joke. One kid would wash half the drivers door then move to the trunk, stuff like that. They didn't wash half the car. I was shocked by the general ineptitude of it all. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56697389 Nope. The companies are too picky. They wont hire you if you are too educated or too smart, they fear you will leave. They wont hire you if you are too undereducated or not too smart, they fear you will leave. So they are stuck trying to find the "perfect match" while totally ignoring the people they should be hiring ... the ones that applied. I was turned down for numerous jobs because I was "too educated" so I spent much time unemployed. I was super desperate for work, and would have done anything, and I literally spent lots of time applying to anything available. They were just too picky. It made me really angry, and I eventually gave up looking. Then I decided to work for myself instead since no one was giving me a chance. But it was their loss. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 56933010 United States 04/23/2014 10:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The thing that these kids don't understand is that it takes a long damn time to get good at anything. And it isn't just know how and knowledge but also ethics. In my youth I had no problem doing somebody a shit job to get my money real quick. Now I despise that shit. It's beneath my trade and my skill. And I don't want to hear "nobody will hire me." There are all kinds of ads in the paper and on craigslist. Yeah, it's a shit labor job in construction or some kind of trade work. $8 or $9 an hour, blistering heat, hard labor. BUT THAT'S WHERE YOU START! That's the test you got to pass before anybody is going to spend their time teaching you their trade. Scoff at trades all you want. I know many a tradesmen who do damn well for themselves. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57257530 I'm glad I didn't go into the corporate world. I had the chance after college, but went back into the trades. I'd think the best path for many in such a position is to start your own business. That's the end path of many tradesmen too. |

I didnt do like the average worker and skip work and complain I worked hard and took off running. Now 17 years later I get paid 500+ a day to watch other people work and document all thats going on. If it wasnt for my bad back I would go out and try construction or work on the deck. Yep....there is some great stuff out there now if you are looking to go into a trade....and actually work. Problem is the "ME GENERATION" is used to sitting on their asses playing video games, Facebooking and and watching YouTube videos on their phones all day. ...and then they expect to make 100K per year as an entry level salary or they refuse to work.
