Is it really a status thing that they have passed on for centuries? Is it their actions? Are they genetically superior and smarter than everyone else? There has to be something, at least, I wold assume.

History is the tale in the march for king and Queens there is nothing royal except their tale. There were families who were kings and Queens before the ones now, they beheaded and murdered to gain the throne. No nice people, and they keep it in the family if you do what is told. They marry kin, that would really keep that blood blue.

Everyone has blue blood before it hit oxygen. These kings and Queen are on a chessboard and there is others pulling the strings. The moves they make across the board is by those strings. Any of you want to be Royals?

Yes they ruthlessly exercised absolute power. Sometimes they were deposed by other waring families. Today's European royal families are just a shadow of their bloddy ancestors with no power, little wealth and just some of their prestige left.

Now why a king is so special? The land owners used religion to control the people. The biblicals, not just bible but many others, write that who ever their god is mad kings to keep over the people. Regardless of who the god is the biblical source or the existence of the god, it has been used as an excuse to take for others.

In the past, royals believed their appointment was from God. Recent monarchs will say, luck of the draw. There is nothing special about royals on earth. Its not like their blood has divine powers or anything.

Lots of inbreeding in that lot maybe has bred out the more despicable traits though, or maybe it's just belief that they are somehow "special" that keeps them afloat.

The ancient Pagan kings of the UK had a family tree the traced back to Odin the Norse God. Supposedly the UK royal family still keeps this genealogy up to date somehow.

The Japanese Imperial family traces its lineage back to the Shinto Sun Goddess.

There is usually some kind of ancient diety invoked if the Royal House is old enough I would guess.

The other family I've heard about were the Romanov Tsars. I still would not like to live in that gilded cage no matter what wealth it comes with, look at Queenie, she is out there all the time, from when she was driving her ambulance during WW2 to today, matched with an expectation you'll send you kids to war, and every one looking to you for answers, all in all it does not sound like the kind of life I want to lead..
