I remember a roofer falling of our roof cause the wind caught the plywood he was taking up the ladder which he refused to let go of that 4x8 plywood to save himself the 30 foot fall to the concrete down below where his teeth remained as my dad carried him to the basement to flush the rest of his teeth out a his mouth with the hose.

I roofed, shingles, gravel and hot tared. Its hot work and the nights were beer soaked remedies for the next days grueling labor.

Roofing contractors are bad ass and if you let them tell you what they want for your roof, you tell them what your paying to have a roof slapped on.

The cost of material is your cost of labor if a contractor quotes you a roof job.

I had a roofer tell me he doesn't touch anything under $30,000. I got guys that will do my roof for 20 bucks an hour and I buy the material.

Since I will be the general contractor, its my responsibility to make sure these monkeys do it right.

Easy, it is one of the most physically demanding jobs around. They have no time to be nice to a soap using, teeth brushing, fancy clothes wearing ( By fancy I mean clean) hussy.

It is a mans job, albeit when shit ain't going too good, but nonetheless, a real man's job.

There would be no need for unions if every business were run this way. In the long run, you make more money treating your employees with respect and dignity.

Had a local family of Russian immigrants re-roof an entire condo complex. All very hard workers and the patriarch was extremely dedicated and knowledgeable albeit slightly unfriendly. Sons were better English speakers and easy to work with.

Even months after the job was finished the father would show up at a moments notice to diagnose and repair small leak issues that arose. These were due to bad siding near the roof and not a product of his work, yet he fixed them for us at no charge.

I will admit to hiring "Mexicans" on about 3 occasions back in the 90s before I realized just how much we were crawling with them, and how arrogant and ill mannered their political moves were becoming.

First time, I went to get 2 of them lunch, one of them stuck his hand inside the adjacent window and stole the clock radio off of the customers dresser.
Until that happened, neither of us knew that the customer was an immigration officer. I told him that I would track these 2 down if he wanted. Lucky for them, he had bigger fish to fry. But they did make me look bad.

Next, I hired a seemingly harmless one. He was willing, but he didn't understand to stand on the ceiling rafter, and not the drywall, Crash! And it just had to be over the customers computer. Had to run home and get the vacumm and tiny hose. Not looking so good, again.

Hired one who insisted he understood to climb 3 stories.
Too scared to climb when actually got there.
Quickly gave him bus fare, and showed him bus stop.
Looking better.

Had one who was okay, but spent his time on the phone, and alternately telling me had to go.
He still calls me, and I let him think maybe something will come upnext month; (maybe next year- maybe ten years from now)

BTW, do not touch the door knobs where they are the thickest. Use a rag or something.

I have to wonder how some of these small businesses survive.
