Police Departments gone all NSA (aka cell phone interception)

maybe it's not really news, but the information on this was uncovered via the freedom of information act. They can't release more info because the company that owns the equipment has a gag contract where the police can't share this info with the media...I'm not sure how legal that is when considering the freedom of information act.

Furthermore, if they're listening to all these conversations, what would the legality be? I'm venturing to guess that they'd just get a warrant after hearing important info, but wouldn't that warrant be based on illegally acquired info? It's one thing to have an informant and quite another to have someone eavesdropping and getting all this info. Now...with buffalo and other smaller cities in the area, how the hell are they able to sift through all these conversations and texts to get info that can lead to an arrest?

The question is how legal is this sort of thing when not on international waters? and not for terrorism? I ask it like this because the similar equipment the military uses is generally for terrorism and drug trafficking in international waters...or by the nsa/css...

why is the popo getting involved in nsa type stuff unless this is happening across the US, in nearly every county (or all major counties), sort of like SETI had used many computers to gather info....maybe this is federally funded...Erie county won't release how this project was funded.

it's possible, but if it's only the guestimated 25 major police depts, I'd guess closer to probably not, unless this is nationwide and only a few have leaked info on it. And yes, it is bullshit. It may spread like wildfire among the PDs though.

A lot of cities I looked up, or even just states, had news about this, so far. Either I'm spot on with my search, or there's way more than 25 cities/counties utilizing the Stingray/Kingfish technology from Harris Corp.
