Anonymous Coward 05/11/2014 04:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well do keep in mind, The Weather Channel is TELEVISION and that means that whatever the mind control/brainwashing/AGENDA du jour is, they're gonna be stirring and dishing it out. Next they'll be like, "Oh, radiation is no big deal! Nuke plants?! Don't worry about that! The sun is pure radiation and we're not afraid of the sun are we!? No! We wouldn't even be able to live without the sun! RADIATION IS GOOD!!!" |
TheGasMan II User ID: 57325048 United States 05/11/2014 04:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, the sun radiates radiation. That is why your skin burns. Usually more so on a cloudy day as the sun (or radiation) is reflected every which way due to the moisture in the clouds. Quoting: Mister Obvious Yes we would all freeze to death in the darkness without radiation from the Sun, specifically light and infra-red radiation. I imagine you are confusing ( electromagnetic ) radiation, with radio-activity. K |

We all need 'radiation', plants can't photosynthesize without it. It's the type of radiation, and how much of it, that matters. Yes, the sun gives off harmful rays. We'd be dead without it though. This is elementary knowledge. Stop acting being overdramatic. It makes you sound like a lib. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 49445647 United States 05/11/2014 04:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ahhhh,,,the "global warming" and "polar vortex" channel. We used to have that on in the early days in the 80s as "background noise" around the house...the new version is hard to watch. I miss "Tumbleweed" (I forget her name, but she was one of the originals...we gave her that name when one of her cohorts commented on her hair). |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 55734279 United States 05/11/2014 04:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well I need more examples than "he was saying despite the clouds in the Colorado area (they are having a snow storm), "radiation" will still peek through....meaning the sun." If it was the sun peaking through the clouds, and not specifically the radiation from the sun, we'd have a much bigger issue here on earth. If that's the only way he was mentioning it, then he was correct in his usage of the term. |

I retyped some of that and didn't entirely fix it. |

Yes they are throwing the word 'radiation' out there now and they rarely used it in a forecast before that I can recall. I think its because after the Fukie incident it we will begin hearing the radiation word more now that 3 years has passed. Its likely because they want to get the public use to hearing it as common wording so when we read about other radiation no one will pay much attention. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 57723232 United Kingdom 05/11/2014 05:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So probably Americans are twitchier about the word radiation. The Weatherman was right, we are just over a month to the summer solstice, UV radiation peaks massively in the summer, much of Colorado is at altitude, also a UV risk and clouds don't stop UV radiation as much as they stop light, so people get burnt on cloudy days. [link to i.imgur.com] [link to www.youtube.com] The Koreans are not scared to use the correct name for UV radiation, I bet the American forecaster got people ringing in to complain. K |

Yeah, I turned it on last night hoping to see the weather. about an hour of watching it I finally got a simple preview with some graphics and no one talking. It lasted for less than a minute. I guess it is sort of like turning to MTV and hopoing to hear some music. Fat chance of that. |
Jackson49 User ID: 57884290 United States 05/11/2014 05:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Light, infrared, and ultraviolet are all forms of non-ionizing radiation. Microwave ovens heat with a type of radiation. Cosmic rays--gamma rays, and x-rays are forms of ionizing radiation--they can knock electrons off of elements/compounds. This can damage things like DNA. Radioactive substances emit any or all of gamma rays, beta particles, and alpha particles--- all of which are capable of "ionization" and tissue damage. Non-ionizing radiation is also capable of direct tissue injury, but it is uncomfortable and we withdraw from it. Ionizing radiation can not usually be felt. |
