If you take a look at the link I put in the above post, you'll see videos and pics of how bad the damage is.
Later today, I'll post about the area around my home.
My home is ok, I'm pretty far away from water sources, but there are many who are not as fortunate.
All that rain we had just turned destructive. |

I was on the back nine when the rain started and by the time we got to the clubhouse, the water was nearly a foot deep. By the time I had traveled the ten minutes to my house, I was having to judiciously choose my path because of all the flooded streets and stalled cars.
A parking lot at a nearby mall was flooded with four and a half to five feet of water.
So, I'm feelin' ya pain! |

In DC, it dumped the heaviest one day rain since 1896, closing Metro and many Fed buildings. Bad T-storms took down trees around the neighborhood-two at the house behind us are still hanging over the fence. Dams are at the bursting point. The weather liars were clueless, claiming some front or something was pulling in moisture from the Atlantic. How come that doesn't happen all the time???? The flooding goes way up into PA and NY along the Susquehana River. NJ was also hit. And guess what--this storm the equivalent of any hurricane--has NO name.

I didn't feel too bad that DC got pummeled, but it's sad that the innocent had so much loss, too. I hope that your house is OK. Pollyannah said hers is.
The destruction this storm caused is hard to imagine as it is so wide-spread, like from Florida up to New England! The descriptions you guys are giving is a lot more comprehensive than what we are getting on TV. Thanks.

Our county was one of the only counties without a river in it, so we only suffered flooded intersections and leaking groundwater in basements, but most of the mid-west was impacted by severe flooding. Over 10,000 houses were destroyed in that flood. At one point, you had to drive several hundred miles north just to find a bridge open over the Mississippi, and those bridges that were flooded out are HUGE bridges.

Anonymous Coward User ID: 110619 6/29/2006 12:38 PM | | Re: All the videos & pictures of the floods in PA aren't anything like actually being here! | Quote | JAKARTA, Indonesia (AFP) - Fresh floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Indonesia have killed 21 people and left 20 missing on Borneo island.
The floods and landslides struck following incessant rains that began Saturday, said a search and rescue agency official in the provincial capital Banjarmasin.
"The latest report which still dates from (Sunday) shows that 21 people were killed and 20 others are still missing," the official told AFP Monday.
Hadi Susilo, the secretary of the provincial disaster control office, cautioned that the deaths were yet to be verified.
"There is also a report saying 26 were killed and another that even says no one was killed, but at the moment we have no means to verify them," he said.
He said the affected area had been completely cut off.
The floods and landslides follow last week's disaster in South Sulawesi province, which saw flash floods and landslides kill more than 200 people and leave some 13,000 people homeless.
Makmur, from the provincial disaster management center in Makassar, the provincial capital, said Monday the death toll there was now at 217, with 61 missing.
At the weekend, police and officials had upped the toll to 248.
Teams were now concentrating on victims believed buried in landslides in several isolated areas, rather than the ocean where many bodies had been swept, said Effendi, from the National Search and Rescue Agency.
He said personnel were concentrating particularly on several isolated locations as yet untouched by rescue efforts.
The state Antara news agency reported separately Monday that floods reaching up to three metres (10 feet) deep in North Sulawesi had damaged 3,000 homes over the weekend but said no fatalities were reported.
The disasters are just the latest to afflict the world's fourth most populous nation. Indonesia was lashed by the 2004 Asian tsunami, which killed 168,000 people here, while an earthquake last month on Java killed 5,800.

<In New Hope, the Delaware was cresting Thursday morning at 20 feet, far above the 13-foot flood stage and a foot above the 19-foot crest during the 2005 flood. The borough, a quaint town that is popular among tourists, also flooded in 2004 when the remnants of Hurricane Ivan battered the Northeast.
Business owners along Main Street packed their valuables into vans Wednesday afternoon while police enforced the mandatory evacuation.>

Polly, do the people there have flood insurance? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36898
I'm aware from newscasts that there are some who do not have insurance.
Knowing how people are here it won't be long before someone organizes help for these people. |

Pollyannuh User ID: 46877 6/29/2006 2:56 PM | | Re: All the videos & pictures of the floods in PA aren't anything like actually being here! | Quote | Yep, New Hope is having alot of problems as are most all the communites up and down any rivers or creeks.
It's incredible how fast water rises, and then how slow it is to recede.
They've opened a couple of dams and that created some problems but averted other disasters.
One of the reporters said this is the worst flood in 34 years, but the worst is yet to come.
The mud, muck, and debris is spread over wide areas, and the gunk that will be left in many homes will quickly harden in alot of cases, and stagnate in others. Ugh.
Many homes are already showing signs of being uninhabitable because of structural damage, and believe me, until you see how fast and rough high water flows you can't get a good picture of how devistating a flood can be.
I learned this last night. 6 inches of coursing water is enough to move a person. Saw it with my own eyes. Amazing.
Send some prayers for those in need. |

Yes, I remember that, it was horrible. Water all over the place. I lived half a mile from the Mississippi River, and remember sandbagging for hours and hours. It was a bad time for all of us. Visit my website...
