Israel warns NASA about double asteroids
By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVICH
Israeli scientists have been invited to present important new research on "double asteroids" at a US National Aeronautics and Space Administration workshop in Colorado.
The paper, to be presented this week by Tel Aviv University researchers at the "NEO [Near-Earth Object] Detection and Threat Mitigation" workshop, discusses the discovery of a high incidence of double "Aten-type" asteroids and the danger of their potential collision with Earth, which includes the 2004 XP14 asteroid that will make a very close flyby on July 3rd, 2006.
TAU runs a national information center (supported by the Israel Space Agency and the Science and Technology Ministry) on near-Earth asteroids and comets that are liable to cause our planet harm. At the TAU Wise Observatory in Mitzpe Ramon, researchers monitor these celestial bodies and study the light coming from them.
As part of his doctoral work at TAU, David Polishook investigated Aten-type asteroids that transverse the Earth's orbit but most of the time are located between the Earth and the Sun so that they are difficult to observe.
Out of eight bodies investigated, five were found to be double - a main asteroid several kilometers in diameter and a smaller "moon" that revolves around it. These moons are apparently several hundred meters in diameter and located only a few kilometers from the asteroids they circle.
This discovery is important because the presence of the moon disrupts scientists' plans of eliminating the danger to Earth posed by double asteroids either by changing their orbit or destroying them in a nuclear explosion.
Following the presentation on the discovery by TAU researchers, NASA workshop organizers are to write a report for the US Congress on the subject. Since only American citizens are permitted to present their research in person, the Israeli scientists were asked to send their data as a "white paper" for discussion.

It's a torino scale 1 for a 2077 impact. - Not a 2006 impact. And torino scale 1 is still "very very very very very very small chance that it hits earth or the moon).
And it's trajectory is way out of earth's way:

Closest 2006 approach is further away than the moon (and no it won't hit the moon)
He is right about asteroids that are mainly between the sun and earth. Those are the hard ones to find! |

I just checked this post and see now that first link is saying article is not found.....
I saved the link yesterday on my computer to post here.... now it is not showing up...
hmmmmm....
O.K.
Just searched for it.... and found it here... but what is interesting now is they removed the reference to the asteroid on July 3rd!
[link to www.jpost.com]
This link above works... but no reference to July 3rd asteroid...
Very odd...
I had copied word for word and the link and saved in a text document to my computer when i saw it and just got around to posting it....
But now it changed locations and the reference to that asteroid...
very odd... |

Curious.

2004 XP14 was discovered by LINEAR on December 10, 2004. It will make a VERY close approach
within 0.00289 AU (only 1.1 lunar distances!) at 04:25 UT on July 3. Four hours and ten minutes
later, our first track starts at Goldstone when the asteroid is only 1.30 lunar distances from
Earth. Its physical properties are unknown, but its absolute magnitude of 19.3 suggests a diameter
within a factor of two of 430 meters. 2004 XP14 be the closest asteroid ever observed by radar, and
due to its estimated diameter, it will be the strongest asteroid ever targeted for radar observations.
Using past experience as a guide, there is a 1/6 chance that it is a binary. [link to www.cyberspaceorbit.com] |

Hehe no, the shuttle can only reach low earth orbit. It can't even reach anywhere close to geostationary! .. Let lone the moon or further! |

Possibly. - But they'd probably tell the public if that was the case. With the cargo bay full, I don't think they even have room for a small probe (with propellant) to reach the asteroid. |

Because reality is the shuttle foam problem will NEVER be fixed. There will always be 'safety' issues.
But the FACTS are the shuttles flew over 100 times and only ONE blew up because of the foam problem (it's always been there). So even if they did nothing to fix it, there's a 1% chance the shuttle gets damaged enough to get destroyed on re-entry.
There's always risk with space exploration, but with today's mentality, some people would rather we NEVER go up again because there's a small chance of a problem.
We're getting TOO safety concsious I think.
So it's either fly now, or fly never. And there's too much pressure from other countries to finish the ISS. And you NEED the shuttle to do that...all the pieces were built to fit inside the shuttle. |

No, the OP made a mistake - 2004 XP14 is not a double asteroid.
And it won't impact anyways. Not even the moon. |
