When I was in what would now be considered "Middle School". my friends and I were fascinated by the whole James Bond/Man From Uncle/Spy sort of thing which was quite popular at the time. One of my friends' father worked in the police department, and he brought us all honest-to-God shoulder holsters (empty of course!) which we wore underneath our uniform jackets whilst we concocted secret coded messages during the otherwise boring school day. I imagine if we were to do that nowadays, they'd be shooting beans at us with bazookas we'd be so deeply buried in prison! Also, my own gentle and kind Dad taught us how to make a real hangman's noose (with string, but the same knot), and I received a Swiss Army Knife from him for my seventh birthday. He'd probably get arrested for child abuse or something today, huh? Point being, we all grew up and led reasonably productive and successful lives without being traumatically scarred for life by our imaginations!!

Man, now I know this country is circling the drain. I used to play hangman all the time in school...

I used to live in Beaverton. We had no problems playing Hangman, hell, our Math class even played a baseball game based on numbers. You had nine classmates on a team, you got to choose between four math pitches, in order of difficulty, and ranged from a single, double, triple, to a home run. If you got the question wrong, you got one out. If you got the question right, you get a hit and your peg goes to the proper base.

We played Heads Up, 7 Up, Simon Says. Nowadays, if you try playing those games in class, you're a disruption, and get sent home..

everybody needs to teach their children the proper questions to use during any interrogation, "Am I being detained? Am I free to go?" and if the answers are yes and no respectively, or even no and no, then they need to shut their mouths and remain silent until a parent gets there.

it doesn't matter if it's a teacher, or the principal, or a neighbor, or a "cop" speaking to them. The response from the student/child should remain the same, "Am I being detained? Am I free to go?" followed by silence.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. They dont ever say it was the game hangman, just a drawing of a hanging man. At 13 the kid could have been a wanna bee KKK or something which would be inappropriate behavior in school. Id like to see the picture before i decide if the school was out of line.

Even if that were the case, the kid should have had a parent present before being questioned by the police.

I did say the police were wrong for questioning the minor without a parent present. That sir is law and the only thing we know to be factually wrong with this until we know more about what actually happened.

I totally agree if in fact we are all talking about the bigger picture, but in my reply i was being specific to this case.

I wrote this story called "Going Nuts" back in HS which was about a kid whose parents were killed in a drive-by. So he went to school and killed a couple of touchy-feely teachers and then went into the hood with an arsenal and went nuts.

Lots of classmates enjoyed reading my installments, which I'd crank out about one a week on an old Epson computer with a dot-matrix printer.

In today's gulag, I'd be institutionalized until shit sticks the moon for that.

A few years ago, maybe 6 years ago now, I get a phone call from my Daughter telling me that she had been suspended for a week. She got into an argument with a boy she had half ass dated, the year before. Since they have a "zero tolerance" policy, they called the Police. I was told that it was "standard procedure when there is a fight on campus"(though the only thing that was thrown was a penny that they boy motioned like he was going to throw it at my Daughter & was dared to do so by my Daughter) & the fact that the boy had prior school suspensions & a trivial police record contributed, I'm sure. My Daughter was informed, by the cop, that she was lucky because if it had been one year later, she would have been arrested for "Domestic Violence", over a boy she had "gone out with" for a couple of months, when she was 15-16 years old.
