RATES RISE AGAIN; BYE BYE BUBBLE

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates again today [link to biz.yahoo.com] -- the 17th consecutive increase -- in an effort to kill off the housing bubble for good.

Investors were delighted by news of the impending collapse of the American economy; the Dow Jones average immediately jumped up by 80 points.

The 1/4-point increase in the Federal Funds Rate means most mortgage rates will also jump by a quarter percent. The federal rate is now at its highest point in four years.

The fast-rising rates have made homes even more unaffordable for desperate Americans, which means even more sellers are realizing the hard way that their houses are seriously overpriced.

"In the latest evidence, the National Association of Realtors said Tuesday that sales of existing homes fell 6% from January to May. The median priced home in May cost $230,000, up 6% from last year," USA Today reported Wednesday. [link to www.usatoday.com]

Sales of existing homes are down almost 7% as compared to last year.

Of the regional markets most likely to collapse, six of the Top Ten are in California. [link to www.usatoday.com]

A 'little' nervous there about your precious economy, 83586?

From the school of thought (sic) that believes, 'no news is good news', are ya'?

Absolutely hate readjusting that portfolio of yours?

The housing market is pretty much done.

It has been declining for over a year and now they've driven the last nail into the coffin.

Get ready for High unemployment rates, recession and welfare crises as before.

THAT is your learned comment? I take it you don't know a thing about what BMG has posted. I'm betting you wouldn't know the difference between "rate" and "point." In fact, I'm betting you are clueless. Why else would you respond in such a childish manner?

Hubby went to a job fair today. Lots of middle-aged men his age there. Very few young folk. All the reps of the employers were looking for either younger people or people with lower wage expectations.

It has begun.

Just talked to two different builders at a wake. Both of them were busyier than they have ever been. This is out in the sticks in the mid-west rust belt. We are always way behind out here, darn. I think that the Fed signaled that this is the last one for a while of these 1/4% rate hikes. This is very good news for the markets and this is why you are seeing this rallly.

Hey, Red, nice of you to step up but it's really pointless to engage some knuckle-draggers.

At best, I use them here and there for my own amusement.

Nice seein' ya'. Good luck to your hub in his job search, too.

True...and the rate hike was figured into the market weeks ago just like the past gazillion times.

Defaulted owners become renters as usual. New housing starts fall (as they should mega developers), the market will self depress and the rich get richer for the time being.

Remember the late 70's early 80's? Have a look at this and tell me what you see.

I hate to burst your bubble (pun intended), but, anytime a psuedo housing bubble pops, it's a good thing for the smart players.

I've been trying to hire someone for some light carpentry in the midwest, and no one is quoting less than $60/hr for just no-brainer work.

Never tried to hire carpeners before, but this seems way out...and they aren't really that hungry for new work

I realized the housing market was a government sham when I went out deer hunting one day on some state land. I found overgrown roads(in the forest!), decaying old houses(in the forest!), old graveyards(in the middle of the forest!). These people probably spent their lives plowing their fields, thinking they had a great thing going, when actually, it amounted to absolutely nothing-deer pissing on their rotting property, skunks nesting on their long-forgotten graves.

(snip)
Another major problem is that the housing bubble has finally burst. Thus far it has only produced a slow leak, but by next year the air will be rushing out with gale force winds. Because the loss of paper wealth and the purchasing power associated with it could potentially produce a recession, some argue that the Fed should pause. Ironically, one of the only remaining props in the housing market is the belief that the Fed will keep raising rates, which pushes remaining home buyers to buy before mortgage rates move up. However, once the general perception is that the Fed is done, this last remaining prop will be gone.

Pension funds loose. Propped up by a booming housing markets, the brokers have bloated the economy. Not just in real estate, stock markets are effected through the investments of ma and pa. The Fannie Mae buyout will create a fizzle rather then a pop.
