I'd get my money back

You leave for a week and then your cat dies. Did anyone feed the thing? O.o

Yes, my neighbor who I paid and the dog went to my daughters. We looked after my neighbors dog for 4 months too while he and his wife were in the Cook Islands. He felt sick to hearing Candle died, he said she was fine while we were gone and she was fine on Friday when we got home!!!! Ask Nutmeg, a member here that phoned me then on my birthday, all was GREAT! I LOVE my pets and treat them like gold.

I feel guilty enough, don't go there, NO neglect was happening.

I got home Friday at 3 AM and all my kids came home for my birthday that afternoon. We had a great day together as a family till Saturday morning. :(

Charlie woke me up kinda crying at around 8 AM, he was making weird sounds, snorting and crying in my face by my bed. I got up and walked around my bed and found my 21 year old cat dead. :(

I know she died of old age, her heart probably stopped, but what is bothering me most is where I found her. It's like she was trying to get to me. And I feel worse because I heard nothing and I was away during her last week of her life. I'm just like I said feeling a bit guilty.

RIP "Candle" sweet heart.

We buried her in the back yard Saturday. I was so glad all our kids were home. She was our first family pet. :(

Cats don't just drop of old age. They become weak for a long time. If it was fine one day and gone the next, something happened. Doom ON. Bring in your mato plants

Our cat died at 18 in nov. 2013. She knew she was leaving, she was frail but with great effort made rounds in the house and yard the day before.

I hope you don't beat yourself up for too long over it. I know I would be crushed at first as well (got choked up reading your OP), but she loved you plain and simple. She just wanted to be close to you one more time at the end. Those little creatures are pure love.

Go looking for another kitty to adopt.Sounds like your cat will want to come back ASAP.I swear cats and dogs have OverSouls..so your old kitty will merge with the new one. I suggest one very similar in markings..Personality won't be quite the same, but she will attach to you and your family immediately..and Charlie will get his friend back..Same Soul and new healthy body..Many cats and dogs refuse to leave and just wait for their families to bring another home to merge with..

Has happened to me and my family several times..Still miss the old personality and old familiar form at times, but the bonds of love are just as strong with the new healthy form.

Aw ... that's rough. Especially being away. That would hurt me too. And it's natural to feel guilty but honestly from an objective third party (me) there's no doubt you gave that cat 21 years, which puts her in the top, what, 0.1% of all cats? She had a wonderful life.

You will grieve and feel sad. I still miss my cat who died March of 2013. But eventually we start to focus more on the happy memories. Go through and collect all your old photos and videos of her, especially when the kids were young. That would be fun for the whole family.

BTW who is Charlie?

I'm sorry OP. :( but I have another way of looking at this. your pet was trying to get to you because of the love and trust you nurtured. This was an act of love. Don't feel guilty, please understand how wonderful you made that pet's life and she was clearly displaying that in her last movements.

You did a good thing, but being kind and loving her so much. That final act is just a testament to that. Glad you gave her a good home all those years.
:)

^This^

She was probably coming to say goodbye and this is why you found her where you did. Cats typically will take themselves off and hide when they are sick, injured or know that something isn't quite right. You are fortunate that Candle wanted to be near you in her last moments, and I would consider it an honour. She clearly loved you.

I have 2 cats of my own at present, and as a family we have always had at least 2 kitties running around the house, so I can totally empathise with you when you lose a member of your furry family.

But, chin-up Kate, it is hard to deal with, but just know that you had a good life together and she obviously thought very highly of "the larger weird-looking cat with the nice food" (apparently that's how our kitties see us). :) :hugs:

You let filthy beasts into your house? So that not only do you have urine, fecal matter, and dander throughout your house but can cough their last germs, viruses, and bacteria into your face as they're dying? You should rethink this.

Kate,

It takes a family of kind hearts to look after a kitty for over twenty years. She passed peacefully and maybe she did try to reach you. That is not important now and you should let that part go. You have over twenty years of great memories.

Be well and remember her forever.

Candle lived 21 years. That's says a lot about you being a loving and caring pet owner. She out lived her life expectancy. She is at rest now and I'm sure she is looking over your family appreciating the great life you gave her. Don't feel guilty, feel happy that you had 21 wonderful years together. Much love to you and your family.
