Fukushima UPDATE:

Wigner Dust.

Radioactive Nano Particle Dust!

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]
Nuclear fallout, or simply fallout, also known as Black Rain, is the residual radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere following a nuclear blast or a nuclear reaction conducted in an unshielded facility, so called because it "falls out" of the sky after the explosion and shock wave have passed. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust and ash created when a nuclear weapon explodes, but such dust can also originate from a damaged nuclear plant.

This radioactive dust, consisting of material either directly vaporized by a nuclear blast or charged by exposure, is a highly dangerous kind of radioactive contamination.

I have to say, I'm a little confused by this. Wasn't it less than a month ago that all these people were decrying Kevin's alarmism and kicking him out of their club.

Now he's the darling commentator again? Is this showing further rifts or division amongst the various people involved?

Or did some people suddenly do some growing up and recalling just what we're really up against?

Either way, this is encouraging to me. I always liked RadChick, and was surprised at how things went down over the fire.

Doesn't she post here occasionally? Is it public what handle she goes by?

I think it shows the resilience of the movement... Kevin was about to throw the towel in and I think this side jaunt with Rad Chick shored up the battle wounds per say....

Kevin was removed from Rainbow warriors but there are many other research groups. (Fukushima 311, Radnet, Occupy Tepco, Radiation Watch) [et al]

That is why I wasn't touching the fire issue with a pole...

Things are almost as they were, and I've seen personality shuffling a few times over the years when it comes to disinformation or unsurity from the incident based on emotion and individuals passions being stirred...

Interesting aside, I'm working with Archlight of Nuclear-News on setting up a weekly podcast between us...

I wrote this a while back, Chugiakian has already seen it a few times probably, but I'll subject him to it again.

This story is from the early 80’s when I still lived in Alaska. When people ask why bother trying to wake people up, this is one answer.
----
I grew up in Anchorage. I'd always dreamed of moving to Japan to live for a while. Not going to happen now. I'd also hoped to spend some time living in Alaska again someday. I guess that's getting pretty unlikely now. For multiple reasons.

I used to spend as much of the summer as possible a couple hours out of town at Long Lake (named that because, you guessed it!). We had a deal with our neighbors to use their cabin if we would be the first to use it, and clean it, after winter.

Being out in the middle of the lake in a canoe after sundown, with the loons laughing at each other from the lily pads on the bank, I remember looking up at numberless stars through faint clouds of pale green light as the aurora borealis rippled like curtains overhead, the future as limitless as the stars.

Our being able to perceive the awesome beauty and wonder of moments like that, and our ability to share such experiences with others, is just one of the things I feel humanity brings to this universe, and perhaps which the universe would be a lesser place for if we vanish from it.

We need a paradigm-breaking miracle. We increase our chance of getting it by making people aware of the reality of where we are now, and holding to the possibility that it only takes one idea we haven't thought of yet to turn this around. I believe every one of us owes every living thing on this planet our best attempt at keeping all the plates we've got up in the air spinning long enough to get that miracle.

Don't do it for me, do it for the loons.

To use the words "throw the towel in" implies that you're doing something significant to start with.

No one's doing anything significant about Fukushima outside of TEPCO, the rest of it is like pissing in the ocean. If you think the rest of this makes any difference in the big picture you're delusional.

It will take nothing less than a miracle to do anything significant about Fukushima.

Are you really serious? You can't fix stupid and arrogant? That's a shame.

Would you go back and read your post before this one, and then never darken our door again.

You don't have the first idea what the situation at Fukushima is, other than bad. What is the state of reactor #2? What is the current loss of water per day per reactor? What is the status of the Fuel Rod removal from Spent Fuel Pool #4?

Now, not knowing the answers to the few questions above wouldn't be stupid, it's just ignorant of the current situation. Ignorance can generally be fixed.

Unless the person in question is so arrogant that they actually think they have some insight into what's going on, without having any knowledge to base it on. The only people doing anything of significance is TEPCO? Well that would depend on what you mean by significant.

We certainly agree that it's going to take a miracle to solve this problem. Where do you think that miracle is going to come from? TEPCO? Jesus? Aliens?

They're all a little late to the game.

So what have you done to increase Earth's chance of getting that miracle? Do you have any ideas where might be llkely avenues to explore? Are you following ANY of the work ANY group is doing?

Are you familiar with the Dunning Kruger Effect? This might help encapsulate it.

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias manifesting in two principal ways:

Unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their ineptitude.[1]
Those persons to whom a skill or set of skills come easily may find themselves with weak self-confidence, as they may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. See Impostor syndrome.

Dunning and Kruger proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:
tend to overestimate their own level of skill;
fail to recognize genuine skill in others;
fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy;
recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they are exposed to training for that skill.[5]
Dunning has since drawn an analogy ("the anosognosia of everyday life")[1][6] with a condition in which a person who suffers a physical disability because of brain injury seems unaware of or denies the existence of the disability, even for dramatic impairments such as blindness or paralysis.

If you’re incompetent, you can’t know you’re incompetent. […] the skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.
