were it not for this site and my personal experience, I would chalk it up to a trend.

Possible Freakanomics aside:

Heroin is an effective treatment for asthma (that is why "dope fiend" asthmatic Crowley used it-a much less degenerate reason than you may have been led to believe)

Asthma is a huge problem in the inner city communities

Data on the estimated nationwide prevalence of asthma indicate a progressive increase in asthma prevalence in the United States between 1980 and 1994. This increase is especially perplexing when one considers that our most effective preventive therapies for asthma, inhaled corticosteroids, were introduced into this country in 1979. Many hypotheses have been offered to explain this observation -- from greater indoor allergen exposure in our more tightly sealed houses to fewer childhood respiratory infections to less exposure to endotoxins associated with farm animals

If some factor in the environment is giving everyone asthma, is it also giving them a craving for opiates? (GMO foods? scratching)

Opium served medicinal purposes during the opium wars, thus its popularity. Many users were simply working people who needed it to function. Which one can do on natural opium ash, unlike many more powerful synthetic drugs today.

I'm glad someone else sees the bigger picture. I'm not one to 'blanket ban' drugs just because of the ridiculous amount of government propaganda thrown at them. They were all legitimate at one time, and when used properly can still be effective for certain people.

Of course when you hook other people on an addictive substance, then give them mediocre, uneven qualities per dose, and manage to turn on / off their drug supply at whim, they will get a little nuts while going through withdrawal.

The entire 'epidemic' is government manufactured idiocy designed to profiteer those at the head of the smuggling & banking chain.

Of course if you 'legalized' them all at once, a few more will likely die the first year or so, but after that it will all even out to the way it's been for thousands of years.

That's what happened in Portugal. It all worked out nicely.

From RT:

"Heroin use in the US has become an important story ever since the lethal overdose of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s thrust the drug back into the spotlight. Soon after his death, reports of an extremely lethal batch of heroin laced with the painkiller fentanyl began surfacing, and the drug was blamed for dozens of deaths across multiple states on the East Coast."

Philip Seymour Hoffman was a young, genius, Oscar-winning actor with unlimited potential ... and he had a wife and 2 kids ... But he died in his NYC apartment after overdosing on heroin ... Truly a tragic waste.

More people die in Cuyahoga county (Cleveland) from heroin overdoses then die from homicides and car crashes combined...

Go back 20+ years and I was losing a friend a month at the time.
