Major brands are downsizing servings while charging the same price without telling you.
From cereal to cookies, paper towels to peanut butter, you can find it in supermarkets everywhere: Some of the most trusted brands getting smaller, the price tag not so much. "It's a very sneaky way to raise the price of a product," said consumer crusader Edgar Dworsky, who runs the website, consumerworld.com.

One tactic: the "optical illusion." Dworsky showed us two boxes of Apple Jacks side by side. Back in 2008 the product went from 11 ounces to 8.7 ounces, but from the front, the two boxes appeared the same; only when they were turned to the side did it become apparent that one was "much narrower," according to Dworsky. "That's one of the tricks of the trade," he said.

Dworsky also showed us two 8-giant-roll packs of Bounty paper towels that looked almost identical. But one had 72 sheets per roll, the other only 66 sheets per roll. "You think you're getting the same thing, but you're really losing like, two-thirds of a roll," he said.

Then there's the old "hollow the bottom" technique. "Here's Skippy peanut butter," Dworsky said. "The old one was 18 ounces, but now it's only 16.3. How did they do it? They hollowed out the bottom of the container." It looks the same, he said, but when Skippy downsized the product in 2008, they didn't drop the price.

Dworsky said "new and improved" is another common ploy. "They just downsized Chips Deluxe," he said. "Here's the new package." The words "New Look!" appeared up in one corner.

"They're diverting your attention up to the top, right-hand corner," Dworsky said. "You should be looking at the bottom corner, where you see you're getting almost two ounces less."

I've seen this before, but just today, I saw one that simply floored me. I am at work, put $1.25 in the snack machine for a pack of Hostess Cupcakes. These things now are more like thick cake "cookies" than cupcakes.

Perfect name for it. The best part about this type of inflation is no one really notices it until the sizes will be half of what they were.

Same thing goes for when my girlfriend and I go out to a major restaurant chain. Same pricing as before, smaller portions

I try to avoid the major brands whenever I shop, but what else can a guy do to curb this? Consumers need to vote with their dollar together.

The choice is yours.

Pay more for the same, or pay the same for less.

Fact is that inflation is starting to appear in the American dream, soon to be nightmare.

McDonald's shrunk their large fries containers. They lowered their prices for a week. Then the price went up from the original price about 100 yen/1$. But the joke is on them, I'm no longer buying anything from McDonald's.

And the gubment is more than happy for them to do it, because now they get to adjust the core cpi....and claim no inflation exists.

I noticed this recently with plastic bottles for condiments or salad oil/dressing. They used to put on a flip top with a hole you could squeeze the stuff out, now it's just a screw on top.

I've been saying for a while that they are replacing regular salt with sea salt either because it's cheaper for them, or they feel regular salt will be worth far, far more in a couple years as will all real, tangible commodities.

I have noticed it with your examples but also with toilet paper, especially the double rolls. It used to be they barely fit on the roll holder, being so nice and thick, now these double rolls are the same size as regular rolls. They certainly don't last double the amount of time.

Well, who TH has the time anymore to notice these things and to write in to the company about it? My late grandfather, who was a steel union worker and probably had oodles of time at his disposal, was notorious for writing companies about products he had purchased and why he was or was not satisfied. He got many freebies out of this.

They've been doing this for some time, curly wurlies, Mars bars and wagon wheel are all considerably smaller than they used to be. I vaguely remember reading an article last year that said that manufacturers 'had to' downsize their products in order to keep them going and people in jobs.
If everyone would just stop buying and accepting the rip off, it would make a massive difference.

Don't forget how our 20 ounce cokes come in handy 16.5 ounce bottles now either. Toilet paper? Just increase the size of the tube and now less paper to make it the same size. Look at the bottom of most of your jarred products today... Notice the depression? This does not aid in stacking or bottle integrity.

I noticed this practice coming in years ago, but no one seemed to care. Now it is downright impossible to ignore, but the frogs have been in the pot too long to notice anymore.

Pretty entertaining to see this in action. This stealth inflation and all of the other band-aids they're using all throughout the economy... well, let's just say it can't go on forever...

I mean, how long can they keep shrinking the size of the toilet paper before everyone has SHIT on their hands?

That was like when gas was 4 bucks a gallon and delivery services started charging a "fuel surcharge". When the price of fuel dropped to 3 bucks do you think they dropped the "surcharge" ? Hell no, that's profit now - no way they are going to drop it! !!!!
