I've worked in technology sector and now teach at a university. I work with every student group from freshmen to gradschoolers. I tell them all: grades mean shit. You can get great grades without having learned anything - not in my class, though. I no longer give exams as I don't think they reflect anything meaningful as far as the learning goes - they only show that a student can memorize stuff and regurgiate it back on paper. In my class, they always do a practical project (often in a group to better simulate the real world) and present it to me. I ask questions they'd face in real life project meetings: how the schedule was met, what are the costs and problems, technical details and - by pretending to be a pointy-haired boss with no understanding of the science behind the project - questions that may sometimes be absolutely ridiculous. They graduate as experts in science and technology and must be able to explain complicated things in layman's terms and deal with idiotic questions. I do give grades, but they're based on demonstrated practical work, knowledge and understanding. When someone wants to join grad school, I always interview the candidate. One of the things I want to stress is that getting the doctoral degree right after graduation will only make your future employment much, much harder. "Don't do it, but if you do, don't say that I didn't warn you." You'll spend four years working seven days a week on a niche project gaining nothing but academic experience. At the end, you're over-educated for most jobs, lack work experience for those that would suit you and you're getting too old to get a more normal engineering job. It's worth it only if you first work for a few years in the industry and get your degree then, or you aim for an academic career that's nothing but a huge gamble. |

Bought-and paid-for politician scumbags and oligarchs. George Carlin said it right, "They don't want people who can sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they're getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago... They want obedient workers....People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork, and just dumb enough to passively accept all the increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it." Don't give me that, "American Dream" bullshit. It is over. [link to www.youtube.com] |

And the ride goes up and down and 'round and 'round. It has thrills, and chills, and it's very brightly coloured. And it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Some have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, 'is this real, or is it just a ride?' And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and they say, 'hey, don't worry, don't be afraid ever. 'Cause this is just a ride.' And we kill those people, 'Shut him up, I've got a lot invested in this ride, Shut him up!' Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This has to be real... It's just a ride ... But we'll kill those good guys that try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the daemons run em up; but it doesn't matter, 'cause it's just a ride and we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice, no effort, no work, no job, no savings of money, just a choice right now: between fear...and love. - Bill Hicks |
