Re: Support thread for those with cancer, terminal illness, or any life altering physical ailment. For caregivers as well
Today, after a rough night in the ER, my daughters oncologist called and gave us the best news we could receive. Her induction chemotherapy worked and she is officially in remission.

Going forward we have two years ahead of chemotherapy, but we just know that this will never, ever come back.

Joannie, I am so happy for you as well. It sounds like it was a day of great news.

Thank you all for your prayers for my daughter!

Thank you Paige and Simple!

She still needs the treatment but just hearing the words "remission" brings a HUGE sense of relief.

From the bottom of my heart... Thank You! You all are in my prayers.

My oncologist at Montefiore stays on top of all of the latest studies, he's one of the tops in the field. When the chemo meds stop working, and they will, he wants to try to immunotherapy.

He's actually going to some big conference next week. Not everyone can afford to go to John's Hopkins so they do make all of their studies available.

Thanks for the info. And thanks to everyone who is supportive.

Have you seen this, Joannie?

I saw an article while at work the other day but I can't remember where I found it now. I think it was about the same drug.

Basically (in the article I saw) the drug works by unblocking pathways that prevent the immune system from recognizing and attacking cancer cells. They were talking about melanoma cancers that had spread to other organs. One man had all trace of cancer removed from his lung after using this.

I'll try to find that article, but this is a similar one.

 Quoting: Paige

I use mekinist and tafinlar, both just approved by the FDA a few months ago. Treatments for melanoma have just exploded this past year. So..if I were ever to get it now isn't a bad time.

My dr. told me after the meds I am using now lose effectiveness we'll do the immunotherapy. In the past 6 months two doctors have give me just months to live. Even if there are clinical trials I can use.

I've gone past the six months and I am feeling better today then 4 months ago.

We will keep on fighting...and that's all of us no matter what we are going through.

Hi Joannie!

That's all I've got. : )

My appointment today was the consultation so we just chatted and scheduled the surgery. I had him check almost my whole body so that I don't have any "whoops" in the future. He was a bit concerned about the length of time since I first noticed the spot. Thinks it might be deeper than he originally thought. But the good news is the surgery will be soon and hopefully that will be the end of it. Fingers crossed. : )

I wish I had more to share, but the appointment was mostly talking/asking questions. The ball is rolling though. Thank you so much for being you! I hope you are feeling well this evening. hugs

Thank you again for this great thread! I have learned more here than in my doctors office. You've given me hope. I want to do a shout out to the peeps that keep me hanging on, God, my kids, Dr. Goldfarb, my surgeon and my onc, Dr. Bodkin and to GLP for holding my hand when I needed it most. Thank you. On a side note, earlier in this thread someone mentioned that they couldnt get a petscan. My doc said to contact the Mayo clinic, they treat the uninsured somtimes for free or a sliding scale, worth a shot.

Thanks FP! That's easy for me, all I want to eat is ice cream. But not too much of it.

It was weird after my whole brain radiation I didn't want to eat anything. All of the things I used to love to eat were disgusting to me.

It's a little better now but I never know from day to day what I might like. About a week after my radiation was done a bunch of my teeth fell out. I can just imagine what those rays did to my brain.

Was at the doctors almost all day but I do have good news. When I went to this doctor initially she referred me to another oncologist who's specialty was melanoma. She told me she did most other kinds of cancer and didn't want me to be shortchanged on my treatment.

I agreed that was probably the smart thing to do even though I really liked her it was wise to go where the knowledge is. I kept her on for pain management.

I go in today find out on her own time she took some seminars on melanoma to see what was new and if she could help me. Really..what doctor does that?

She told me when I first went to see her months ago she thought "this poor lady had a death sentence". Now she says after learning the new info. and treatments I have a chance. She told me not to reserve my hospice be just yet, I do have a fighting chance.

She was talking specifically about the chemo meds I've been taking. They are brand new and they've had much success with them. So at least I have hope where I didn't have any before...makes a huge difference in my psych.

I am just really impressed with her that she would go to the trouble for a patient. Some doctors really are in it to help save lives and not the pay check.

Going forward we have two years ahead of chemotherapy, but we just know that this will never, ever come back.

It happened with melanoma as well. Swedish doctors had to stop giving organs, blood, tissue, etc. from anyone who's had melanoma due to the fact that the person receiving would develop melanoma.

..."The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny ... it is the light that guides your way."
