Although I do not have cancer or any terminal illness, I lost my only brother to cancer just yesterday.
I never have felt so much pain and anger before in my life. My heart is so broken right now and I just want to scream and cry and hit something.

I hate the doctors so much because when we found out almost 1 year ago, he was already at stage 4 and they believed that the cancer had been there for several years! He was often setting up appointments with his doctor because of bad pain and symptoms and telling them something was up. But like all doctors, they didn't fucking care! All they care about is sending their patients home with a prescription instead of trying to find the cause.

I'm so sorry and I can relate, my only brother died the same way 4 years ago. Stage IV at diagnosis as was I. It is maddening and so unfair thinking they could have had a chance.

Through experience we learn. Don't take no for an answer if you feel something isn't right. How many stories have we heard like this? Doctors aren't Gods and we know our bodies.

He didn't get to stage IV overnight and the doctors will cover for each other. I really am feeling for you, only time will help with the pain..and the anger.

Sometimes legal action is warranted, money is the only thing they understand. I don't know your situation completely but it's something to think about.

Re: Support thread for those with cancer, terminal illness, or any life altering physical ailment. For caregivers as well
Hi Joannie,

My family is very supportive and I've been dragging my mom around with me lately to any appointments with a specialist. Lol. She's a trooper. She's also my best friend. : )

However I don't always feel comfortable enough to talk about how I'm feeling. With anyone. Oddly enough I feel much more comfortable talking to my GLP friends than I do ANY of my "real life" friends. Pfft, my real friends are here. <3

Yes, a biopsy was done. My PCP removed what she thought was all of it, but after the biopsy she told me that the cancer had gotten so deep into my skin that it would require surgery.

Before I switched my PCP to this current one, I had shown the spot to my previous doctor (maybe 3-4 years ago) and was told it was nothing and not to worry about it. So I didn't. But it just wasn't looking right to me so I showed my PCP at my physical and she immediately said "that's skin cancer." So it's just been doing it's thing for all these years and got deeper and deeper.

Probably could've avoided surgery 3-4 years ago. But it is what it is. I'm glad I have you all for support. hf

hugs

My mom was my best friend as well, no one will ever replace her.

You have no idea how many times I've heard stories of doctors dropping the ball leaving the mole or whatever saying it's nothing. I don't understand why they wouldn't double check just in case...so that really sucks for you and it makes me really angry.

I believe the depth (clarks level) is the main concern as far as melanoma goes. It permeates the layers of skin and then likes to travel.

Hopefully it hasn't gotten that far. It goes without saying that you have my prayers honey. I check in here every now and again to see what's going on.

Thank you Joannie. She had surgery today. It went very well and she is sleeping peacefully. We have a 10 day break now before we have to go back to the hospital so we are both feeling a sense of relief. I'm really starting to hate that place. UGH. The good news is today was her last dose of decadron, so hopefully she will be a little more comfortable in the coming days.

Does anyone know how long it takes the "moon face" to go back down to normal? She is so swollen and uncomfortable.

Do you mind saying where yours is located. I've read the 80% of them are discovered on the head or neck.

What tipped you off that something was not right?
 Quoting: Paige

It is on my right upper arm. Like the front of my right shoulder.

What tipped me off was I had noticed what looked like 2 or 3 little tiny bubbles/blisters on that area of my arm. At first didn't think too much of it, but after a little while of them being there, I had mentioned it to a doctor I was seeing at the time. She said "oh that's nothing to be worried about, we can just freeze it right now. Nothing to worry about."

Pfft...Ugh, this frustrates me so much. That was so long ago. Years. This whole scenario could have been so much easier to handle. I mean, it's deep. It had already started to show physically 4-ish years ago (and I could be wrong, it may be longer ago). I believe it was the end of April/beginning of May that my current PCP removed the spot for the biopsy. Those same bubble/blister looking bumps are already coming back. It also kind of hurts/stings at times. I know the surgery is going to be more on the serious side because my PCP told me that the oncologist I'm seeing is really great and if need be plastic surgery can be done for the scarring...

hiding

I didn't like that. : (

But the good news is that my nanny sees the same oncologist for her recently discovered breast cancer and she loves him! Says he is great. She actually just had her surgery today and is doing fantastic!! I am so relieved and happy about this. I was heart broken when I found out she had breast cancer...for a few different reasons. But she's doing great and I am going to be seeing the same doctor she's been seeing. : )

Re: Support thread for those with cancer, terminal illness, or any life altering physical ailment. For caregivers as well
Hi there,

First of all, nice thread. Just room for stories, for whatever's the need. Everybody best of luck and lots of strenght in this crazy reality.

I too have cancer, cervixcancer in first stage (1A2 FIGO stage). I've had minor surgery to remove the suspicious cells and it turned out to be invasive cancer but the tumor was not too big and was totally removed already. However,I will be scheduled for removal of the uterus, and somehow I just didn't expect this. If the tumor is gone, the cancer is gone, I thought, but now I know I was being naive.

I am 35 years old, and thanks to God I already have a beautifull child of almost ten years old. I am dealing with Ehlers Danlos (connective tissue disease) since her birth, and thought that was my 'challenge' in health. Now I know that there's no rules to the game of health... I have severe chronic pain which isn't life-threathening, and I have a life-threathening disease which I don't feel and which is discovered by five-yearly standard test...

Will be weird, to be without uterus, however, I do realise that I am Lucky to have such favorite (??!!??) circumstances to my cancer and that this was discovered in time to minimize the risk so many other people are facing.

First time for me, since this is on my path to write it down...

Welcome to the thread my friend! Looks like they got it early and want to do the hysterectomy as a "just in case" measure which is a good idea.

Make sure you keep all of your doctors appts. in the future. I know a few people that felt that were cured and kind of forgot about their illness, be vigilant.

Chronic pain is no joke. It's hard to live a normal life when you can't sleep and are on meds, etc. This thread isn't only for those with life threatening illnesses. So please, come back and post.

Hey guys, just noticed my feet are almost 3x their normal size so I've got some severe swelling going on, glad I am going to my doctor.

Anyway, if you don't hear from me it's because she's put me in hospital...please I hope not!

Don't worry though, sure I'll be fine but with the blood clots they are still trying to figure out a way to treat me without using blood thinners.

Peace out!

Just a heads up to breast cancer survivors:

More than one in 10 older breast cancer patients treated with certain chemotherapy drugs develop heart failure, but many don't get proper treatment for their heart condition, a new study suggests.

"The majority of older women who develop heart problems after their breast cancer therapy aren't treated by a cardiologist, and they had lower quality of care," study lead author Dr. Jersey Chen, a research scientist and cardiologist at Kaiser Permanente in Rockville, Md., said in an American Heart Association news release.

Re: Support thread for those with cancer, terminal illness, or any life altering physical ailment. For caregivers as well
After reading this thread last night:

Thread: Hit the end of my rope, need some hope.

I felt there was a need/want for a thread for those of us who are seriously ill, caring for a loved one, or those whose health has changed their way of life.

I have seen in random threads that there are more of us that are fighting and I would like to see a thread where we can support others and get support in return, good news, bad news, whatever.

I am trying to include all. This thread can be a place to vent, share treatment options, cry, tell stories, etc.

There's also those of us who don't have a lot of support from family or friends who need us.

I'll start:

I have Stage IV melanoma, terminal. I am in the phase of care which is supposed to give me comfort and keep me free from pain as there is no cure for melanoma.

I started taking chemo meds which have just been approved by the FDA a few months ago. They helped to shrink my brain tumors and eradicate most of the lesions in my brain but they were making me feel terrible. So much so I had to go into the hospital 2 weeks ago.

Doctors advised I stop them or just take one at night..still on the fence as to whether I want to go back on them..quality of life vs quantity.

Then last week I had severe pain in my right flank and wound up at ER with internal bleeding, had to have 4 blood transfusions.

I wont go into extreme detail, just want us to be able to share with each other. Hope I didn't muck this up too much.

Dichloroacetate Acid (DCA)

"DCA’s anti-cancer properties were discovered in 2007 by Evangelos Michelakis of the University of Alberta. In experiments on rats, Michelakis showed that DCA demonstrated dramatic action against a wide variety of cancers. He experienced a “eureka moment” when he saw that tumors of various types had been dramatically reduced over the course of a few short weeks.

Moreover, DCA showed very minimal disruption to healthy cells. “This is the so-called Holy Grail of cancer treatment,” remarked Michelakis at the time. But Michelakis, along with a host of other medical professionals, warned patients against self-medicating despite a spate of nascent websites offering the product.

In medical research the gold standard of acceptability of a treatment is a phase III clinical trial. There is only one problem: DCA is not patentable. It has already been used at least since the 1970’s in the treatment of a rare metabolic disorder and is generally well tolerated. Moreover, the chemical is simple and dirt cheap."

Check it out on the web; great information and it could be worth a try.

Was at the doctors almost all day but I do have good news. When I went to this doctor initially she referred me to another oncologist who's specialty was melanoma. She told me she did most other kinds of cancer and didn't want me to be shortchanged on my treatment.

I agreed that was probably the smart thing to do even though I really liked her it was wise to go where the knowledge is. I kept her on for pain management.

I go in today find out on her own time she took some seminars on melanoma to see what was new and if she could help me. Really..what doctor does that?

She told me when I first went to see her months ago she thought "this poor lady had a death sentence". Now she says after learning the new info. and treatments I have a chance. She told me not to reserve my hospice be just yet, I do have a fighting chance.

She was talking specifically about the chemo meds I've been taking. They are brand new and they've had much success with them. So at least I have hope where I didn't have any before...makes a huge difference in my psych.

I am just really impressed with her that she would go to the trouble for a patient. Some doctors really are in it to help save lives and not the pay check.

No, it won't be weird without a uterus. I had a full hysterectomy at 33 and yes, it is a painful surgery, but you will recover and be fine. Please don't worry about it too much.
