yeah they would tell you they would make more money in private practice, that they are taking a pay cut to serve veterans.

like all government jobs though, you get paid no matter what you do, so not really much accountability. Not saying they are bad people, that's just human nature. You do what you have to, usually. If you don't have to really do anything, you probably won't.

I know nothing about veteran's adminstration but it's just logical that when you wound tens of thousands of young soldiers who will need lots of care for the rest of their lives, you are going to over burden the system.

these people need lots of surgeries every one of them sometimes, people use to just die in the wars, now they save them all, need lifetime care.

I think people need to realize this before they support going to war for weapons of mass destruction that don't exist, you may end up without legs or arms. who the hell would support that sort of dumb shit? Boy there are a bunch of morons in this thread. The names are of VA employees. They pay no malpractice insurance or for anything else. In fact, they get 23 days vacation a year, 15 sick days, 10 paid holidays and for every dollar they contribute to a pension fund, the government matches 4.

Many of the people on this list are doctors who are in research positions, there are some non-medical people who are in administrative positions.

BTW, a doctor fresh from residency at the VA will make a salary of about $100,000 per year at least and much more if he/she has a specialty. The average VA doctor makes somewhere in the neighborhood of $180,000. Not bad for a forty hour work week, wouldn't you say?

Where you under the impression that surgeons were cheap? Those are relatively modest salaries for surgeons. Most make north of $500k/yr.

A doctor's reputation and license is on the line. Everyday.

Most have to take call, do night shifts and be available every moment of every day. They don't have the luxury of ever spacing out or forgetting what they did yesterday. The expectations placed on doctors is exorbitant. No other career has such pressure.

The benefits you listed ...are standard benefits for hospital employed physicians. Receptionists and file carpers do not get those benefits.

I think the salaries of public employees must be made available to the public by law. That is how the sports page knows the local Public U.'s football coaches salary, but doesn't know the salaries of any of the coaches at private universities.

Anyway, I would assume that those salaries are legit and almost exclusively for surgeons. As far as surgeons go, $300,000 is pretty light. The two surgeons I know well both make around $600,000. Plastic surgeons pull in more than $1 million per year.

So this is not necessarily an key discovery around the VA scandal.

I guess you can't read. I said the average physician at the VA makes $180,000. Some practicing physicians will earn 250,000 or more through specialty equalization bonuses. They also work 40 hour work weeks. VA doctors do not, I will say that again since you are so thick, do not have malpractice insurance. You cannot sue a VA doctor, it is possible to sue the US government under the Torts Claim Act, but that is a lengthy process and the doctor is immune from any monetary sanction.

By the way hospitalists mean salary is $204,000 and they do not get 23 days paid vacation their first year or 10 paid holidays and they often work 24 shifts. The actual hourly rate for a VA physician compared to a hospitalist is greater.

These doctors *do not* pay any malpractice insurance premiums, and therefore should not be making this much. They work for the VA, which, as a federal entity, has a limited (but very board) exemption against being sued - essentially, you have to get permission from the federal government, to sue the federal government.

And secondly, the VA pays for their limited liability insurance, at a group rate. Since these doctors don't have to pay for their own malpractice insurance, why should their salary be "competitive" with private doctors who do have to pay the insurance/tax???

And FWIW, this wasn't the case just 8 years ago - VA doctors, even surgeons and specialists, only earned half of what doctors in private practice did... I know, because when I stopped going to the VA (~2007), a big part of the reason was that every good doctor left and went private. Only the crap doctors remained on staff for any period of time.

Try showing up for an appointment, and not being seen until 2 or 3 hours later.

When you had to take time off from work.

Not once, but repeatedly.

And not in the GP clinic, but in a specialist's office.

And if you are late signing in, they will tell you that you've "missed" you appointment, but regardless of when you get there you will wait for several hours.

Try being told that a test you need cannot be performed for another 3 months, because there is only 1 doctor qualified to do it, and his schedule is full for the next 100 days?!?!

Yeah...they work really, really hard. 8am to 4pm every day, every Monday through Frida, except for 11:45 to 1:30, which is their lunch "hour", and except for their 15 paid holidays each year, and their 15 days per year paid vacation, and their 10 paid sick days, and their 3 month paid sabbatical every 4 years... And they get paid for non-clinical activities like going to conferences and symposiums, and, etc, etc, etc...
