[link to in.rbth.com] FROM ARTICLE: According to the ICAO, the loss of GPS and GPWS signals (which warn pilots that planes are dangerously close to the ground or gaining dangerously high) increases the pilot’s workload, forcing him to check with other air navigation systems, as well as increasing the psychological burden on the crew. Rogozin declared that Russia may halt shipments of NK-33 and RD-180 missile engines, which are an important component in the American space program, if they are used for military purposes. The contract between United Launch Alliance and the Russian-American company RD-Amros, presupposed the delivery to the U.S. over the course of several years of 36 RD-180 rocket engines for Atlas 5 missile carriers, which have been used to launch commercial satellites and U.S. Air Force satellites since 2002. |

An enemy knowing their GPS can use it to coordinate interception. If the missile is guided by X signal, then use X signal to help calculate it's position. Increase accuracy of counter measures. |

GPS isn't that hard to jam/disrupt. It's radio signals just like anything else. I remember when learning about it that things such as clouds, buildings, thick foilage, a few inches of dirt, and so on could disrupt the signal. And if no one has developed a method to block the signal yet then...someone has REALLY dropped the ball. Most likely it isn't an advertised capability, but I'm sure someone has it. |

It is believed that the Russian move is a tit-for-tat exercise in response to sanctions by western countries following recent events in Ukraine. However, the Russians say that the action was initiated by the refusal of the U.S. to enter into negotiations on the placement of Russian-operated GLONASS tracking stations on U.S. territory. Russia wishes to expand its global network of differential correction and monitoring stations, which could conceivably be also used to supply data for GLONASS command and control purposes. FROM ARTICLE: MOSCOW — The deputy prime minister in charge of Russia’s space programs said Sunday that he had started to impose restrictions on Global Positioning System base stations here, as retribution for the refusal of the United States to allow similar base stations on American territory that would improve the accuracy of Russia’s navigation system. The restrictions will not cause any disruption in the operation of GPS, as the American satellite navigation system is more commonly known. Still, they are a sign of how deeply soured relations have become between the United States and Russia in the months since the Kremlin’s annexation of Crimea, and other long-simmering disputes, including Russia’s granting of asylum to Edward J. Snowden, the fugitive national security contractor. Russia, I am going to pin this for you, as I am afraid this will be lost. Quoting: Hardwired Shutting down the data stream will be significant if WWIII really swings into gear. Consider for a moment how many people are dependent on machines communicating to complete a commercial transaction. Both the US and Russia have their own GPS sat networks, with other ground stations providing additional location. It seems we have equipment on their territory used in our GPS system, but we refuse to allow them to install GLONASS equipment on US soil. Can't really say as I blame them, especially after all of the US's limp-wristed pointless efforts at making Russia feel bad about standing up for the integrity of thier borders and taking steps to ensure the ongoing security of same. Under normal conditions, I believe the signals from either system are free to use by anyone who has the ability to receive them, but under extenuating circumstances like a war, the signal can be encrypted, making the whole thing essentially a military-only asset. |
