Feds urge parents to stop using 'Nap Nanny' after sixth death
A sixth baby has died while using a recalled “Nap Nanny” infant recliner, with safety experts again urging parents to stop using the product.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, the latest tragedy involved an 8-month-old girl from New Jersey. The baby suffocated while secured by a belt, trapped between the product and a crib bumper. CPSC officials said the infant was found stuck over the side of a Nap Nanny.

CPSC Communications Director Scott Wolfson said parents should avoid the recliners at yard sales, as hand-me-downs or in online auctions.

“Our message to parents is clear: Stop using it. It’s dangerous,” Wolfson said. “There’s been six deaths already, and we don’t want another child to die unnecessarily.”

Infants can partially fall or hang over the side of the Nap Nanny® even while the harness is in use.

In addition, if the Nap Nanny® is placed inside a crib, play yard or other confined area, which is not a recommended use, the infant can fall or hang over of the side of the Nap Nanny® and become entrapped between the crib side and the Nap Nanny® and suffocate.

My husband told me some mothers in villages use an opiate tea so the kids can sleep under the trees while the mothers tend the field. They stayed safe and sound with natural nap nanny.

I somewhat doubt that for various reasons.

Pinned to get the word out. Never heard of this brand, but I had something similar to this a couple years back - intended for crib use - but thought it was dangerous, as my child could have rolled off the side and face first into the mattress or crib bumper. Never used it again, threw it out.

In the long run, they probably didn't end up sound so yeah, you could be right.

But for the time being, it was safer then leaving them awake under the trees.

I vaguely remember a law being enacted about this very thing several years ago.

Something about not being allowed to sell recalled items at garage sales anymore, with hefty fines that topped out at $1,000,000.

I don't understand why the company is at fault for human stupidity. If it were a product design flaw, that is one thing. However, leaving your infant child unattended while you have them strapped into some foreign device is a parenting flaw, not a design flaw.

Since these kids were all strapped in and inside of cribs, it sounds like the parents wanted some free time, and thought they could just lock the kids up and go about daily life.

I say this as a parent of a 3yo, 2yo and 1mo.

This is the parents fault. It clearly states exactly what you have stated.

We used a nap nanny, and my kids loved it. And guess what, they are still alive.

At the same time, like like every other problem in this shitty world, these terrible parents neglect to take responsibility for their actions....and fuck it up for everyone else.

Re: Feds urge parents to stop using 'Nap Nanny' after sixth death
The problem is that any infant seat or nap area can be dangerous if people aren't careful.

This is why we are supposed to watch our babies and tend to them properly rather than leave them to be 'watched' by a damn chair.

The company said the product wasn't for use in cribs, but people are too dumb to read instructions or believe they know better.

It's a shame six babies lost their lives, but how many children have died in cribs, bassanettes, strollers and car seats because parents have used them improperly?

I don't think that this is an issue of a product being dangerous as much as it is an issue of people being too dumb to use a product properly.

Where is the common sense?

This in a nutshell.

Too many people are looking for something they can dump their kid in and look the other way.

You can't do that when you have little tiny ones. You have to keep your eye on them. If you really need your hands free while they're napping, there are a lot of little carriers that you can use on your own body.

This seems to be a situation where some parents don't want to be bothered with their kids - hell, they don't even want to be bothered with reading the directions on the packages of the products they buy for them.

Silly.

And I say this as the parent of a 17 year old and an 11 year old who survived infancy.
