Nobody in my family even mentioned "college" ; dad was a hard working blue collar type mom a "legal secretary" handling real-estate paperwork.

Wife and I funded my kids (state) college b.s.degrees( copmputer science& chemistry) though they did work also. Both (daughters) are doing well making more straight out of college than I ever did.

Govt. funded E-Z college loans are responsible for the surge in tuition.

I feel like that mother hawk trying to heave ho that jack rabbit up to the hawks nest to feed a gigantic chick who cant fly yet. I like your input about it "never crossing your mind" to ask (your parents) for help. I too married young - in part due to economic necessity. I sometimes wonder what would have happened to me if my family helped me through college. I have to say its been easier with two of us taking care of our one. I was joking the other day that if we divorced after 25 years of marriage we would then would qualify for all sorts of college grants for our daughter. My husband didn't laugh and truth is we would never be bullied into doing something that radical. I do know families torn apart by college costs though. We are all collectively suffering as a nation from a brain drain. Families are being torn apart and all these kids who could be something are wasting away at some dead end job to pay off a loan that will haunt them for life. This is a uniquely American problem - and yes I perceive it as a conspiracy. That's is why I agree with the creator of this post- and find myself running out of steam in the prime of life. My intuition is warning me to think carefully before giving up and opening my wallet.

Thanks to Boomers, most 22 year olds are $35,000 in college debt in a jobless economy. Thanks to Boomers there are more jobs at Subway and Macy's than there are in offices and schools. Thanks for giving jobs to China and fucking up this country and its citizens to no end.

If some kid goes that far into debt to go to school, it isn't their grandparents fault.
It isn't our fault that the economy was deliberately crashed by banksters.
Those were our jobs that were robbed from us first and shipped off to China.

Boomers cannot understand the difficulties that the youth today face, and Boomers constantly demonstrate their lack of comprehension and pure ignore of the very unsettling factors that sit with the millenials by making absurd statements such as calling the millenials spoiled, when Boomers were no doubt the most priveleged, selfish, inconsiderate, pampered generation of all time. The benefits that you had, the millenials have no reasonable chance of obtaining. College debt has become inevitable. It is not cheap nor does it guarantee a job like it was in the 70s. There is a resource and economic crisis brought about by boomers running through precious resources and plummeting the country into multi trillion dollar debt that the millenials have to deal with. Boomers didn't have any of the negatives that the millenials face today. Boomers were handed everything neatly on a silver platter and selfishly gutted the country, not even taking in the slightest consideration of their children's future like their parents did .

I should elaborate. There is no reason the owners of wal mart wal st, bankers need to earn 40 mil a yr with 20 mil dollar bonuses. While the employees are basically living off of welfare. There is also no reason why us taxpayers need to spend as much as we do on our military. Not necessarily rhe troops but like 20 billion for a stealth battleship. Like we are having so many sea battles, that really seems warranted.

thing is if/when all those debt serfs stop paying it will bring the economy down hard and fast.
