A home invasion and robbery in Pasco County is exposing some problems in the 911 dispatch system. It happened earlier this week on Gwain Road in Port Richey. A man called 911 after four robbers with guns broke into his home, demanded money and prescription drugs. The dispatcher tried to transfer the call from the fire department to law enforcement side of things -- but he got a voicemail just as the crooks returned to the home.

Should have had a weapon in range when they first broke in.

I had an emergency once and had to use the 911 call system and I was put on hold. Called back and put on hold again. Called back and same thing.

The 911 system is overwhelmed with stupid fucking people making non-emergency calls.

I do not blame the system for the stupidity of humanity in this case. They can only answer so many calls at one time. If some asshat is calling 911 about their refrigerator broke down or the pizza guy is late then your real emergency will wait.

Well he is lucky. This kind of home invasion just happened in my town. Except there were five armed guys who broke into and robbed several houses and the police did eventually arrest these guys, but not until after the robberies occurred many hours after the first call. I have been sleeping with my rifle and several full 'standard capacity' mags.

I've never had to wait on 911. Always a competent person who can speak English in San Diego.

Um 911 is the emergency number for the police. I'm sure most people don't know the non emergency police number. I sure don't.

yup. you should listen to the shit calls officers have to respond to. i used to listen to my local police scanner (bc i'm nosy) and officers had to respond to the most ridiculous calls. like someone hearing "gunshots" that turned out to be fireworks. or crazy paranoid people calling for the most random things happening outside their apartments. ridiculous.

Need to establish and instruct proper protocol for the general population so everyone knows how to access the correct wire and use the dialogue to make a concise statement as to need and urgency.
outsource an 'idiot line' to a computer AI.
so the human operator can use proper discretion to one click pass the numbskulls with no business other than wanting attention and someone to think for them, to a sympathetic tardbot that has all day to sit there, and lend a shoulder to cry on, while explaining how they have the wrong number and are getting people killed by their childish nonsense. Then prioritize the data.
Then make a brief summary if there happens to be any actual information, and email it back. Maybe a fast-return line in case calls have merit and require some sort of response other than information.
