Type 2 Diabetes - my cat diagnosed today
I know it's manageable. I'm not afraid to give him the shots and come to find out dry food is a no-no (high carbs) and it's great he prefers wet food, so we're ahead there at least. There's a lot I have to learn and a lot of adjustments to the routine around here with two other cats.

What upsets me the most is this guy is a true "scaredy-cat" He sleeps with me, cuddles, head butts, plays hard but when it comes to handling him he'll have none of that. He's like a worm. He dodges, runs to the basement and stays for hours, god knows where. I just don't know how this is going to go. Ironic thing, when I took him to the vet yesterday he was an accommodating limp rag-doll with them handling him. Umm, that's not going to be the same story here when I try to handle him. I have an appt Monday to learn how to give him insulin shots.

Any advice or tips with those that have been through this? Commiseration, welcome!

Yes

And the needles are so tiny. Be glad! My cat didn't even feel it! I could put down his food and while he enjoyed his (prescription) wet food, I could pull up his skin and inject him no prob. He didnt skip a beat.

Also, did the vet tell you cats can revert from diabetes? Not dogs, only cats seem to do it. Mine reverted after about 3 months.

Food change, and dont set the food out but at designated and consistent times.

I assure you, it's one of those reasons why your cat has diabetes if not both (as is usually the case).

sugarcats.com used to be one, but I see it looks defunct now.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes - my cat diagnosed today
my cat had diabetes also. we gave him insulin for years, and everything was fine. this past new years eve, his sugar bottomed out and he almost died. the vet told me that cats can spontaneously develop or stop having diabetes. the insulin we were giving him had caused his sugar to drop when he suddenly (and without our knowing) 'stopped' being diabetic. ask your vet if there is a way for you to monitor his blood sugar so you can make sure the same incident doesn't occur in your case. my cat is fine now, but the vet bill to save him was in the thousands. hope your kitty and you both stay healthy.

I've read a bit about raw foods and seen them offered at the vets. I'll check in to it more. Thank you.

That's good to hear the needles are so small...and that's a good tip to do it while eating, but this kid is so damn cautious about any movement he perceives as threatening (even though it really isn't) I don't know if that's possible. But I'll definitely keep your tip in mind.

There's a woman at my work that I've known for 10 years and on the weekends she works at the local Emergency Animal Clinic. I talked to her today and she did a good job of 'talking me in off the ledge'. She linked me to a few sites and this one by a DVM has some amazingly honest information.

Anyone with experience have an opinion on this information?

Thank you. This website (already shared) says the same sort of thing. If you're changing your cats diet from high carb to low and they're on insulin you have to really monitor that. Gawd, I hope I'm up to this challenge.

Give your cat a small piece of a Powerstrip, say about 1 inch by 1 inch. Shave a spot where he can't lick, like on his neck, and putt he strip on. There are plenty of testimonials about what it's done for dogs, and I know how it's helped mine. It will be no different for your cat.

wheres the conspiracy?
 Quoting: hannah50

Thank you for asking. Actually there might be!

We adopted Aspen 2.5 years ago from the local shelter. He was 8 years old then (brought home on 11/11/11 - no lie) and I grilled the person tending to my case as to his current heath and past health status. He was surrendered due to 'financial hardship" by his one and only owners who left the epitaph that "if he had a job he'd be a librarian".

I was told by the shelter people that he gravitated to wet food and left the dry food alone. The only issue he had was tarter which wasn't really that bad. Maybe his body knew what it needed?

Ever since I brought him home he's walked strange, back end low to the ground and scoots around strangely. I just thought it was because of his nature of being overly cautious and timid.

Come to find out that's a sign of diabetes. So, did his original owners not wish to deal with the finances/responsibilities involved and did the shelter mask his condition just to get a cat a home? This shelter is not horrible, but there have been stories of fudging the truth to get cats a home instead of putting them down. They say they're a no kill shelter, but there's a gal at my work who knows all the vets and shelters in town and she says they kill.

I am NOT sorry I adopted this cat...I adore him more than I can say, and I'm going to do whatever it takes.

There are quite a few grain-free kibbles low in carbs available now. No prescriptions needed. I call it the "cAtkins" diet.

My kitties like Natural Balance Alpha Cat the best. There are two flavours in the kibble. I buy two bags at a time and alternate flavours at feedings.

Sheba tinned is one of the few non-premium foods not containing grains. It comes in ground & shredded varieties. My kitties seem to prefer Sheba over all of the others.

I buy all cat & dog supplies through Wag dot com. They also have an App. The prices are good. Shipping is usually free on orders over 50-USD. Second day UPS delivery weekdays and FedEx Home delivery Saturdays. No, I'm not affiliated with any of the companies mentioned.

One thing I've done with diabetic kitties, with the Vets' oversight, is start them on grain-free diet immediately and monitor their BSLs with a weekly trip for a draw. This has saved giving them insulin just by adjusting their diet and having them lose the extra weight. I honestly think that's why many people report their cats spontaneous healing from diabetes.

Haven't found a raw, either freeze-dried or frozen, they'll eat. They turn up their whiskers and stalk off with their tails up in disdain. It's quite expensive, too and I don't like to waste food or money. Mine also don't like home-cooked...the husband & dog like my cooking, tho LoL.

Bless you for taking good care of your Kittie! He'll come around, especially knowing you are there to help him enjoy life to its fullest.

p.s. Dental tartar is caused by the sugars in the grains not necessarily the wet food. Switching them to grain-free tinned you'll find the tartar starts to clear away.

Just click my link in my sig. That's my work and it's ongoing. This is the best thing since penicillin, and it might be even better. I know four diabetics who are off insulin because of this. I know a man who was hit by a drunk driver 20 years ago when he was a garbage man who is now off morphine for the first time since being hit. I know a woman who used to ketamine shots for RSD disease due to nerve damage. Out of nowhere she has her life back. This is no joke. Your cat will benefit just the same.

A lot of testimonies to the marijuana bringing down blood sugars. For my animals, before I would start an insulin program, I would see how the mj butter managed the blood sugars. With diet changes the whole insulin thing may be avoidable. It would take some studying and monitoring.

Diabetes being cured by cannabis is just a smoker's lie they tell themselves to justify taking another hit or having another cookie. The whole medical marijuana movement is a crock of horseshit, but George Soros has enough money to get you to believe in the face of all evidence that shows that cannabis does not cure disease but rather makes diseases worse. It causes disease for crying out loud.Nor does it ease pain, as, if it did, I would have been pain-free for all those years, but I wasn't. Nor is anybody else.

Hannah, Hope you & Kittie have peaceful & restful sleep!

To consider over your morning coffee:
Kitties are obligatory carnivores. They only get grains, fruits & nuts/seeds, usually partially digested, when eating small prey animals. They need meat to be healthy.

That's why I'm such an advocate for grain-free diets. And beneficial fats like olive oil & coconut oil. Ever wonder why kitties love cream? It's the fat.

Did the Vet check for diabetic neuropathy? That may be why Kittie was walking off with a lowered rear end & dropt tail. Think of a permanent case of "pins & needles" with periodic bolts of lightning zaps. It can cause litter box troubles, too; might get uncomfortable when he climbs in/out & squats.

My theory with a nod towards conspiracies, kibble & tinned manufacturers know kitties are obligatory carnivores. They need animal protein. By adding wheat gluten & grain or vegetable/legume proteins they can give it a "high protein" label. Notice I said animal protein, tho. Most people see "high protein" and don't read the ingredient list.

Oh! I did try Science Diet Prescription for diabetic cats once...none of the cats would touch it. None! Not even one of the garbage scow ferals. Not even priming it with meat, chicken, or fish broths. That stuff was nasty according to them.

When I told the Vet they refused to eat it, she said to make them eat it. I suggested she try eating it first. To my surprise, she did try to eat it! And agreed...Yuck. Point of the story, your Kittie may agree.

Thank you again, for taking the time to reply. I've read your post and totally agree with the bogus/crap food.

We have an 11 year old male cat who's on the urinary tract food you get from the vets. He eats it and has not had an episode since (last was Jan about 4-5 years ago which included a trip to the Emergency Animal Clinic in town to the tune of $900+ for three days)...I think the food is Hills. Mr. Wonderful always bags it up in portions so the bag it comes in gets tossed. I'll add that this cat (Buddy) has gained a ton of weight since being put on this food. I'm going to try and have him go all canned along with Aspen. Maggie, is going to have more trouble with it. She's a dry food only cat and has no health issues. She just walks away if you offer her canned.

My friend at work says an all canned food diet will work for my urinary tract cat as well - I've got to talk this all over with Mr. Wonderful (who's due back any time now from the bluegrass festival) - this is going to stress him right out. He adores our 3 cats, reads them all well, respects them - but I know his stress patterns and I know this is going to put our house through some major changes (besides the obvious of insulin shots for Aspen).

I know I can do this, I'm just worried about Aspen. Here's a pic of him, after about a year of being with us, FINALLY acting like a cat instead of being afraid and leery of nearly everything.

Regarding the bolded part:

Well, I can't find the 'mind blown' emote. But that's what I'd have used if I had. Great analogy.

Well, at least all three cats will eat roasted chicken, beef or pork. Fish, is iffy. Some like it, some don't...depends on if it's salmon or haddock.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes - my cat diagnosed today
Can you scruff him? Works on Boris, but not Michet.
 Quoting: Boris the Cat

Before I took him to the vets Thursday, I'd "scruffed" him a couple times to check for dehydration. He didn't like it the third time I tried. But if I'm doing that while we're cuddling he takes it as a pleasurable thing. Go figure. We go Monday to learn how to give the shots.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes - my cat diagnosed today

Stevia or noni juice may help but i do not know if they work in cats

Noni juice is not for cats.
Stevia neither.

They need meat.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes - my cat diagnosed today
