Conservative state legislator writes a human interest story with hilariously bogus numbers

"On June 23, 2014, a group of 40+ freedom-loving citizens, armed with shovels, wheelbarrows, and deep seated principles, answers the call to dig! These individuals sacrificed their Sundays to help a fellow citizen and veteran. Starting at 10 am, a group of volunteers caravanned to the mine site and set up camp. In a flurry of activity that lasted about 3 hours, a human chain of men and women moved about 2 tons of dirt."

Numerous other numbers are quoted in the article. Should we take them seriously? The writer is a state legislator and political science professor -- a conservative who wrote a column a few years ago that was carried nationally. So I'm not picking on a poor rookie.
