Interior Minister Said Siam called Palestinian security forces Thursday evening to 'prepare to repel the Israeli attack'

Ali Waked

The Palestinian Interior Ministry announced Thursday evening a high state of alert among its security forces in Gaza.

Palestinian Interior Minister Said Siam called on security forces "to prepare to repel the Israeli attack in Gaza."

Palestinian interior and national security spokesman Abu Hilal sounded more determined when he stated clearly that orders have been given to Palestinian police officers and security forces to fire on Israeli troops.

This is the first time that official Palestinian sources say that an order have been given to Palestinian security forces to open fire at IDF forces operating in Gaza.

An interior ministry spokesman said that "the officers and security force members should open fire at the invading Israeli forces."

And they think they can win... how?

If they were smart, they'd just make one giant "peaceful" protest, march all the way from Gaza to the West Bank. *Dare* the Israeli army to open fire... then they'd at least have world public opinion firmly on their side.

Oh, and while they're at it, get some guys on CNN who can speak English without an Arabic accent...

Hamas's problem, and that of Arabs in general, is they're not exploiting their enemy's weak point. Arabs *should* be perceived as victims, as the underdogs... but with each such order as this one, the world thinks "well, it's just two opponents fighting it out like men, and Israel is outnumbered 50 to 1 in the region."

I can respect them for their pride, but strategically, they're incompetent. They're losing the propaganda war, which is the only war that the average Westerner gets to experience - and the only war that they have a chance of winning.

Take my word for it, the Syrians are not your enemies, nor are they the enemies of the Israelis. I lived there for several years in the 90s, they're a secular, relatively reasonable country, and its population is among the *least* brain washed in the Arab world. They *know* their media is controlled, the "average Syrian" is not your enemy, and even their PTB cooperated with the US in intelligence-gathering up until the *US* cut down on those ties.

They're not Islamic fundamentalists, they're Baathists, as in secular "Arab Nationalists"... and their security forces spend a lot of time hunting down Islamic extremists.

I for one am going to be pretty pissed off if the Israelis - or Americans - attack Syria.

If Syria attacks first, so be it, they'll have to take the consequences... but don't believe the propaganda that they're an "evil terrorist" state. The US has supported "terrorist" movements in the past, they just call them "freedom fighters"... just like the Syrians consider Hamas and PLO freedom fighters.

" the "average Syrian" is not your enemy,"

they aren't the ones declaring wars...

"They're not Islamic fundamentalists, they're Baathists, as in secular "Arab Nationalists"... and their security forces spend a lot of time hunting down Islamic extremists."

and what happened to the last Baathist/secular .gov? Iraq ring any bells?

the PA will get support from somewhere...

I thik the last casualty reports I saw were dozens of militants to 1 IDF.

I don't xpect this to wind down anytime soon. I see this as a calculated escalation. Who's pulling the strings? I'm not sure. but it seems like all the 'axis-of-evil' is in the headlines these days.

Smartest thing I've read on this all day....but I'm thinking Hamas KNOWS they can'w win figures losing a bunch of their people, civilian and otherwise, will accomplish the same goals you've stated.

By not losing. Israel can inflict some casualties on them but short of genocide, the palestinian problem is there to stay. Guerilla warfare.

It's also the religion, the Quaran is VERY specific in this area.

They HAVE to try to defend themselves, it is what God wants.

But I agree, they are like lambs to the slaughter, hopefully some "help" will arrive in the form of other Islamic countries.

The only problem with that is that the Israeli troops would just wipe them out Thats the kind of genocidal maniacs that they are trained to be.

And the media wouldnt present it in the way you suggest because all the major broadcasters are owned by Zionists or their many wealthy sympathisers

REad a little history, fella!

Many died so that 'we' could have the rights we now have.

And many do NOT take it for granted. To do so is folly.

Re: BRKG - Open warfare in Gaza (PA ordered to fight IDF)
Could this be in response to Israel arresting/kidnapping the Palestinian Parliament President Hassan Khreisheh earlier today? I believe Israel has only arrested people with links to Hamas so far, but I've read that Hassan was "independent" and not part of Hamas. By all definition he was a civilian and a legally elected politician who was not connected to the organization that did the kidnapping. (By the way isn’t that a war crime? Where is the UN? lol)
Anyway it seems they (both sides) finally found what they have been looking for oh so long, another reason for a declaration of open war.

Up to 12 Palestinians, 1 Israeli killed as Gaza offensive intensifies

GAZA CITY (CNN) -- The Hamas-led Palestinian government told its security forces Thursday to fight Israeli troops moving into Gaza.

Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled Abu Hilal said all Palestinian security forces had received orders to join the resistance against ongoing Israeli military incursions. It was unclear how many of those forces would answer the call.

Israeli troops were locked in battle with Palestinian militants as Israel stepped up its bid to free a captured soldier and counter Palestinian rocket attacks.

There were conflicting death tolls on Thursday, but as many as 12 Palestinians may have been killed. The Israel Defense Forces said one Israeli soldier died.

Most of the Palestinian security forces in Gaza are loyal to the Fatah Party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Hamas defeated Fatah in parliamentary elections earlier this year.

Hamas has accused Israel of trying to destroy it with its military action.

Saeb Erakat, a Palestinian legislator and aide to Abbas, said the president wasn't involved in the call to security forces.

In previous fights, Palestinian security forces have been on the sidelines for the most part, while the Israeli military battled militants.

Deaths mount in Gaza clashes

[link to www.channel4.com]

Twenty two Palestinians have been killed in the worst day of violence since Israel entered the Gaza Strip.

Gunmen also killed an Israeli soldier in northern Gaza, in the clashes.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered tanks to push deeper into Gaza overnight after militants from the ruling Hamas movement fired rockets into a major Israeli city for the first time.

The incursion expands an offensive that began last week with the main goal of bringing home a captured soldier and piles pressure on the Hamas government, already on the brink of collapse because of a Western aid embargo.

Among the deadliest attacks on Thursday, an Israeli air strike near the town of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza killed six Palestinian civilians, witnesses and medics said.

The army said it had carried out two air strikes against armed militants in the area, killing four gunmen.

A spokeswoman said she was unaware of civilian deaths.
