Vatican partners with Islamic museum for unique exhibition
For the first time ever, the Vatican is staging an unusual exhibition in the Emirate of Shajah. The show is seen as a sign of openness and cooperation between religions.

Ulrike al-Khamis has outdone herself. In a project that began six years ago, the art historian from Germany was tasked with bringing the extensive collections of the Emir of Sharjah into shape when the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization was renovated and re-opened. The exhibition she is now presenting in a sparkling domed building almost the size of a soccer field has exceeded expectations.

The Second Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions has opened at the Palace of Peace and Accord in Kazakhstan’s capital city Astana, the Lenta.Ru web site reported Tuesday.

The second congress will focus on freedom of religion and respect for other religions, and the role of religious leaders in strengthening international security.

Unlike the first such congress that took place in September 2003 this year’s event is attended by renowned state and political figures from different countries as well as special envoys from a number of international organizations.

Observers have noted that the Astana congress will be the first large-scale event where representatives of the religious circles of the Arab Countries could meet their Israeli counterparts for the first time since the end of the Lebanon conflict.

The congress has brought together 30 representatives of world and traditional religions, including from Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Daoism and Shintoism, and 13 guests of honor. The event is being attended by representatives of international religious organizations, among them the World Conference on Religion and Peace, the World Foundation for Zarathustra Culture and the World Council of Churches. Unlike the previous congress, the current one will be attended by politicians from different countries, among them former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad, former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami and UNESCO head Koichiro Matsuura.

The congress will be covered by over 350 reporters from more than 50 countries.

The congress was opened by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the author of the religious congress initiative. The previous congress was held in Astana in the autumn of 2003.

In the opinion of Alexander Machkevitch, the President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, the congress will focus on religion and society role in preserving international security, which has become its motto.

“We are taking part in the congress not only to share the positive experience in cooperation between confessions in our region,” Machkevich told reporters, “it is important that the international Jewish delegation that had arrived with our assistance and which includes chief rabbis of Israel Yona Metzger and Shelomo Amar finds ways for mutual understanding with Islamic countries here. First of all through the dialogue between their political and spiritual leaders.

He also told reporters that the cornerstone-laying ceremony for the future synagogue in Oskemen was planned to match in time with the congress. The synagogue will be named Beit Rachel after Machkevitch’s mother. Rabbi Metzger and Israeli ambassador to Kazakhstan Ran Ishai attended the ceremony together with the head of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.

The Second Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions is taking place in the new Palace of Peace and Accord that had been built under guidance of the famous British architect Sir Norman Foster, who is also among the authors of the skyscraper complex that is currently being erected in the place of the World Trade Center in New York, destroyed by terrorist attacks in 2001.
