Forster, on the mid north coast of NSW, was hit with mass amounts of hail at 3pm on Saturday. Streets of the beachside town were covered in 10-15cm of ice as the severe storm cell passed through leaving hail the size of golf balls. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] At around 3:00pm (AEST) on Saturday, June 21, 2014 heavy hail blocked gutters on the roof of the Stockland shopping centre, and water poured into it. [link to www.abc.net.au] hailstorm had damaged rabi crops, including wheat, pulses, oilseeds and horticultural crops in over two lakh hectares in Yadagir, Gulbarga, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts. [link to www.deccanherald.com] While hail in Sao Paulo is not unheard of, the volume of small hail, washed into large piles by heavy rain, was a sight not seen before by many residents. The city has no snow plows, so bulldozers were called in to remove the hail. Sao Paulo is near the Tropic of Capricorn, about 23.5 degrees south latitude. Despite being closer to the equator than Key West, Florida, Sao Paulo's altitude – about 2,500 feet above sea level – lends itself to thunderstorms with hail. [link to www.weather.com] |

I looked a the hailstones after and a lot of them had this weird spiral pattern. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59625503 Weather modification ? Who knows? I have seen hale a few times in my life but this was really extreme. Also, it's HOT now, hot sticky summer weather. The last thing I expected was ice. There is probably a natural explanation but this is a conspiracy site so why not entertain all possibilities? |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 51311176 United States 06/25/2014 06:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Q: What causes hail to form? A: Hail is caused when raindrops are lifted up into the atmosphere during a thunderstorm and then supercooled by temperatures below freezing, turning them into ice balls, says Dr. Dick Orville of Texas A&M University. "The faster the updraft on these balls of ice, the bigger they can grow," he adds. "On some hailstones, you can actually see rings inside them which show they were cycled through the thunderstorm more than once. What starts out as a tiny raindrop becomes a pea-size chunk of ice and some eventually get to be the size of baseballs or softballs. [link to atmo.tamu.edu] |

I don't recall ever seeing strong hail like this in Tokyo for over thirty years. Maybe from time to time, but I wouldn't call it common around here. But I agree, it's probably natural. Weather is a very strange thing. |
