Re: BREAKING:: 3 quakes central oklahoma in the last 15 mins
There were 4 quakes listed before these new ones showed up on global incident map. 1 in Kansas, 2 in OK and one in Tennesee. All within last 10 hours I believe. Yesterday we had one in Ontario/near the UP of Michigan. All were under 3 besides the ones in OK. This is alot of movement and could be connected to the New Madrid. There is a fault that runs from New Madrid to OK, as well as SC. Remember when OK and SC were 'trading quakes' a few months ago. There was a long post about it back then with some great links, Ill try to find it.

This is not an uncommon practice for the USGS. They'll post the data from an initial reading, then pass it through a couple more computers for analysis and comparison from other instruments and then revise. Generally this means it'll go lower, though rarely it'll be an upward revision.

And if an 8.9 hits Oklahoma of all places we're in serious trouble. Probably kiss the Oogalala (or however it's spelled) aquifer good bye and you'd be having devastated areas from the Gulf all the way up into the Dakotas due to the geological makeup of the area.

A while back when the 4.7 hit down there we actually felt it here where I live and I'm pretty far away. Monitored the waves as they came in on a seismograph one of the school's hosts. Was pretty neat, but scary when you think about how much more powerful an 8.9 would be compared to that 4.7.

These recent quakes are taking place along an established fault line. Look up the Nemaha Fault and compare it to the map of the recent quakes.

I think they are fracking on a fault line and that is the cause.

It's a mixture of things.. There's a fault line in Oklahoma and fracking is certainly exacerbating. If there were no fault line, there wouldn't be any earthquakes, fracking or no.
I lived in okc for about 10 years before moving to japan and there were no earthquakes all of the time I lived there except once, right before I left in 2008. They didn't start until fracking started.

Very true, but put an 8.9 EQ just a couple hundred miles away on solid continental bedrock? The New Madrid quake had bells ringing in Boston and it was in the 8-ish range. Point was there would be major shifting in the earth and all that underground water would be moving about and who knows what would happen past that.

I have suspected that the Oklahoma quakes are connected to Yellowstone. Don't ask me to "prove" my data, I really can't. You say, why doesn't yellowstone show up on the earthquake map at the same time? the answer is, they have the sensors off, all except private ones.have you ever noticed though that when yellowstone does show it goes off, it it makes a nice "line up" from Oklahoma, and colorado all the way to yellowstone. my two cents..

Re: BREAKING:: 3 quakes central oklahoma in the last 15 mins
Quakes happen on or near known fault lines because quakes are capable of happening. Whether they're man-made or naturally occurring- point is as long as they're less than anything major, they're relieving stress and reducing the risk of future major quakes.

Were they fracking in OK when the last regionally significant quake near OK City in 1952 occurred, when a 50 foot crack was created in the side of the OK ?

Fracking is the easy culprit because its the latest buzzword and boogeyman, and by untrained eyes, the most visible culprit- but water table depletion and the latest environmental (EPA, Obama DoE backed) crazes of carbon capture sequestration are just as capable, if not more capable, of causing man-made quakes.

Water table depletion creates a void of matter.

Carbon capture sequestration (CCS) causes a surplus of matter.

Fracking and oil operations at least replace much of what they extract in the form of produced brine/non-potable water and sand.

Carbon capture and storage likely to cause earthquakes, say Stanford researchers [link to news.stanford.edu]

Certainly would be convenient to practice CCS operations near fracking areas if you knew the risks so you had a scapegoat, would it not?

...but you won't hear that inconvenient truth from Al Gore.

Fracking is just one more example of big business being allowed to run the show. I live amongst a bunch of geologists and guys buying/selling oil leases. Times are good for them - they have more money than they know what to do with. But they are living large on the backs of people who have wells fouled because of the fracking process and scared residents who have to put up with constant earthquakes.

Why does our government let them get away with that? Because big oil always runs the show.

I read that Fracking takes place 3,000-15,000 feet below.. if you look at the depth of the earthquakes, they are usually around 5-6km. If you convert feet to km you get the precise measurements that goes on in Fracking.

Just a thought
