Obama sounds the alarm on looming Highway Trust Fund shortfall


With a potential transportation crisis looming at the end of the summer, President Obama used the backdrop of a bridge that connects Washington, D.C., and Virginia to urge Congress to come up with a solution - and fast.

At the Georgetown Waterfront Park, which looks out onto the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Mr. Obama asked lawmakers to close a tax loophole for companies that send profits overseas in order to fill the coffers of the Highway Trust Fund.

He may get tired of writing them when he figures out we are not going to listen to anything from Washington D.C. until the straighten up a start doing the right things.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) predicts that the fund, which has traditionally drawn its revenue from the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, will be depleted by late August. As a result, the funding that states get from the federal government for highway projects - about 45 percent - will start to shrink. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx warned reporters in May that letting the account expire could lead to 700,000 Americans losing jobs in road work, bridge-building and transit maintenance as 112,000 highway and 5,600 transit projects underway come to a halt.




IF the Federal gas tax reserves will be depleted by August,
perhaps he should consider stopping money from this same budget to be spent on shopping malls.

However, all that simplicity comes at the cost of hundreds of credits and deductions that have been woven into the American way of life. There would be no more personal exemptions for you, your spouse and your dependents; no more credit for child care; no more deductions for medical bills or for state and local taxes.

The mortgage interest deduction would be available only for mortgages worth less than $500,000, instead of the current $1 million (though currently held mortgages would be grandfathered). And an important tax break for the poor would be dramatically scaled back.

Investment income would lose its special status and be taxed like regular income. And the wealthiest households — those earning more than $450,000 a year — would lose virtually every deduction and credit, including the tax-free treatment of health insurance premiums paid by their employers.

Who doesn’t love the mall? One can shop in a wide variety of stores featuring clothing, electronics or toys. However, development patterns can change over time. Sometimes a once popular mall closes down after its clientele has moved away.

The city of Fresno, CA has decided to try to revive Fulton Mall, an old development in its downtown. Thus it is turning to a federal Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. While most transportation programs would not support economic development, the TIGER grants are not most programs.

The TIGER Grants are supposed to support “transportation projects of national significance.” Yet, during the 5th round of the TIGER grants, a large number of grants went to projects that were neither transportation related nor of national importance. A grant of $15.9 million went towards reconstruction of the Fulton Mall.

I'm a hardcore constitutionalist conservative and I'd like to see more rail and safe clean useable public transportation.

I've always been FOR electric vehicles.(I've got an electro-mechanical technology associates; so I've worked around electric motors an drives in industry. There' sa big upside to fewer moving mechanical parts.)

I just don't think this is the way to do it . Hell Even Italian facsist dictator Mussolini "made the trains run on time".

Why can't this guy do things we can agree on with out breaking our laws?(i.e. Spending bills originate in the "house".

Look, I realize that you want to rebuild America and the way to do it is to invest... BUT... I seem to remember some astronomical amount of money through the TARP program that was used to rebuild America and we didn't seem to see any benefits from it.

The entire country is in shambles like a decaying carcass and this administration wants to siphon all of the blood out of the corpse before it turns to fucking dust.
