IDF advances to within 500 meters of Gaza City

The Israel Defense Forces expanded its operation in Gaza on Saturday morning, with tanks advancing to within 500 meters of Gaza City. Some 15 tanks entered the Strip through the Karni border crossing in what the army said was a search for tunnels used by militants.

The armor corps and troops from the Givati infantry brigade reached the outskirts of Sajaiyeh and engaged in fierce fighting with local militants.

The Israel Air Force fired missiles at a group of militants gathered at the outskirts of Sajaiyeh. Three Hamas gunmen were killed in one of the attacks by tanks shells, Israel Radio reported.

Israeli forces have pulled out of the northern Gaza towns of Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun, the Erez industrial zone as well as three former Israeli settlements.

Israel had seized the area earlier this week, creating what amounted to a buffer zone to try to make it harder for Hamas militants to fire their rockets into Ashkelon, one of Israel's main coastal cities, and other population centers near Gaza.

Rocket fire has not stopped, however.

"We are acting at our own discretion and we do not rule out a return to these areas," an army spokesman said. "The operation is not over."

A Palestinian policeman was killed in a separate attack. It was not clear if he was involved in the fighting against the IDF's incursion.

An IDF spokesman said forces exchanged heavy fire with militants in the area but he was unaware of any policeman being hit.

Also, a Palestinian died of wounds sustained in earlier fighting,

At midday Saturday, about 250 Palestinians conducted a funeral procession in downtown Gaza City, carrying the bodies of two Hamas militants killed earlier in the day in fighting with Israeli forces.

The IAF attacked a tunnel dug near the Karni crossing in the northeastern Gaza Strip on Saturday morning. The air strike hit the entry to the tunnel on the Palestinian side of the border, which was covered by a henhouse.

The IDF said that the tunnel was used by Hamas to smuggle arms and to enable militants to carry out terror attacks in Israel proper.

Israel Navy ships were shelling Qassam launch pads in northern Gaza Strip, the radio said. Tanks also blocked an east-west road south of Gaza City.

In northern Gaza, troops pulled back from the town of Beit Lahia after two days of fierce gun battles.

Meanwhile, IAF aircraft overnight fired a number of missiles at targets in Gaza, Palestinian sources said. A gunman was seriously wounded in one of the attacks, according to Israel Radio.

The IDF's latest initiative came in response to a barrage of Qassam rockets fired at the Negev on Friday in which three people were lightly injured and several others suffered from shock. The three suffered shrapnel wounds and were taken to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon.

A Qassam rocket landed in an open area near Sderot on Saturday morning, Israel Radio reported. There were no casualties or damage, the radio said.

At least 15 Qassam rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday. Most of the rockets landed in the Sderot area, one landed south of Ashkelon, and one landed half a kilometer from the town of Netivot, also in the western Negev. The range of the rocket that landed near Netivot appears to be more than 10 kilometers. This was the first incidence of Qassam fire in the Netivot area.

Three Sderot residents were lightly injured from shrapnel and four people went into shock.

One of the rockets that landed in Sderot narrowly missed a school building in the city, and wounded three people. Another rocket hit a factory in a nearby town, and started a fire. Two more rockets landed in a cemetery, causing another fire. Two rockets landed in open fields.

"The very fact that one of the rockets nearly struck a school in Sderot, which could have caused a major tragedy, proves the importance of the Israeli army's mission in the Gaza Strip, which is geared to preventing such lethal attacks on our own citizens, in the hearts of our own cities," David Baker, an official in the Prime Minister's Office, said Friday.

Is history repeating itself?

Are the Israeli's becoming the nazi's, using an apparent abduction as the trigger point for a wider campaign against Palestinians?

Certainly not poor, as for brave, by using tanks and dropping bombs indiscriminately on civilians in retribution for a kidnapped soldier is a little beyond heavy handed...

It is being driven to a regional showdown. The Palestinians are merely the pawns of all sides. The real war is not far off.

Israel Rejects Hamas' Call for Cease-Fire in Ongoing Standoff
Saturday, July 08, 2006

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — The prime minister of the Hamas government on Saturday called for a cease-fire with Israel aimed at ending Israel's offensive in Gaza, which has killed more than 40 Palestinians, but Israel demanded that Hamas first release an Israeli soldier and halt rocket attacks on its southern towns.

Israeli forces, meanwhile, scaled back their operations to two spots in Gaza, as violence claimed the lives of six Palestinians, including a mother and two of her children killed by a blast in their house near Gaza City. Two Hamas gunmen also were killed, and another Palestinian died of wounds sustained in earlier clashes.

Israeli troops invaded the Gaza Strip last week after Hamas militants captured an Israeli soldier in a cross-border raid, and have been battering the coastal strip with heavy artillery barrages and airstrikes.

CountryWatch: Israel

On Saturday, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh urged Israel to halt its offensive, release Palestinian prisoners and resume indirect talks about the captured soldier through international mediators. But it did not offer to free Cpl. Gilad Shalit, 19.

"We want to activate this initiative to bring the region out of this whirlpool of blood," Haniyeh said while touring Beit Lahiya, the hardest-hit Palestinian town.

Hamas often sends out conflicting signals, however, in part because of divisions between a more militant leadership in Syria and more pragmatic politicians in Gaza. Israel has accused the Hamas political chief, Syrian-based Khaled Mashaal, of ordering the soldier's capture.

Aides to Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he would not accept a truce until Shalit was freed. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said rocket attacks must also stop first.

The militants have demanded the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel in exchange for Shalit. Israel has said it would not negotiate, but some Israeli officials have signaled they are open to an Egyptian proposal whereby the soldier would be freed unconditionally, and Israel would later release some of its 9,000 Palestinian prisoners as a goodwill gesture.

Intensifying its operations around Gaza City, Israel ordered two airstrikes Saturday evening on an outlying neighborhood. The military was investigating whether one of the strikes, which it said was aimed at militants, hit a house, killing a mother and two of her children, including a 6-year-old girl. Four other family members were wounded.

The force of the blast tore open one of the house's outer walls. The courtyard outside was stained with blood, and a pool of blood collected near the front door.

The lifeless body of 6-year-old Rawan Hajaj was carried inside a Gaza City hospital, wrapped in a red blanket. Her mother, Amona, and 20-year-old brother Mohammed were also killed, and six other people were wounded.

A neighbor said he ran to the Hajaj family's house after hearing the blast.

"People were sitting under a tree" outside the house when the explosion occurred, said Sakr Hajaj.

Body parts were strewn around, and children were screaming when he arrived, he said.

Another airstrike near a mosque in the same neighborhood wounded four people, including a man identified as a militant.
