Fuku: Cooling stopped at reactor #5 sfp July6 | |
RadChick (OP) User ID: 53635335 United States 07/06/2014 12:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wow...good catch RadChick! Quoting: Mountain Woman This will never end, and we know it. It will just continue to get worse. I am impressed with your Japanese. 5:star1133: The original alert came from John Doe in Japan, an American in Tokyo who has been updating this from day 1. We have had cooling interruptions periodically and will continue to have them because of the bombardment from neutron beams and gamma...the affect on metals causes accelerated fatigue through crystalization of the metal matrix. Wigner effect. Corrosion. Previous damage from the eq/explosions, etc etc. In the past TEPCO has always been able to get it back online, once with sfp4 just in the nick of time. The problem with 'leaks' is the water is radioactive and makes it hard for workers to get close and fix what they need to. Spots around the site are already at 10 Sieverts...only because that is as high as the counters go that the workers carry. From CP's post it looks like enough water leaked to be somewhat measurable... The rods need constant cooling though so every day the temp is going to rise in the pool. If it gets to the point of boiling, then we have big problems. They will likely bring in spray pumps or garden hoses to refill the pool before that happens. But this is far less effective than having direct cooling that works properly. #5 is pretty far down the list of pools that need to be emptied. They are stalled at #4 for at least 3 months now for 'crane repair' (probably from neutron bombardment). Then 3, 2, 1 need to be emptied... I am concerned because we really haven't had a major problem at 5 or 6 before. If Fukushima was really the end of the world, we'd see more evidence by now. I think there's a bunch of wishful doomdayers on here. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20018163 sadly, it's comments like that, that keep the news down.. You -0 Tepco -1 So how long then until the news can't be suppressed and everyone realizes this is more serious than they're letting on? |

How the hell do they have NINE days? Nine days for the pool to boil down to the racks? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51858751 Are they going to pull pumps off 1 thru 4 and just overflow the pool letting the heavy water run into the basement? Or perhaps pump it out and into the ocean as well?? OMG ... this just keeps getting worse by the day, month, and year. Why would it surprise you that this going to keep getting worse. Haven't you read articles like the following? [link to rt.com] |

RadChick (OP) User ID: 53635335 United States 07/06/2014 01:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Soooooooooo ... if the sea water pumps have failed, how the hell is this the primary loop getting cooled? I don't know. The trans was rough, it looked to me like the entire loop was stopped. But John Doe said from what he could surmise the outage was only affecting #5. How the hell do they have NINE days? Calculation x volume of water/number of assemblies/ age of assemblies factoring in decay rates. A very long-ass math problem. And TEPCO's math sucks, so I would start to get concerned...now. Nine days for the pool to boil down to the racks? Well, first the water level will drop from boiling. *IF* rods get exposed the zirconium cladding will produce hydrogen, but I'm pretty sure they have poked alot of holes in the roof to let the hydrogen out so the building doesn't explode. Hopefully it doesn't get to that point. Are they going to pull pumps off 1 thru 4 and just overflow the pool letting the heavy water run into the basement? Sounds like thats happening already. I really can't confirm cooling is fine and dandy at 1 2 3 4 and 6. I don't understand how the cooling system is interconnected, they should all be independant of other buildings and pools, but it's Fuku, sooo... Or perhaps pump it out and into the ocean as well?? Yes but that happens on a daily basis already, when things are all working right. There is no way to collect all that water. OMG ... this just keeps getting worse by the day, month, and year. Yeah and it will continue to decay because the metal fatigue is accelerated under these conditions. Even the concrete is affected, electronics, pretty much everything. It will weaken from a possible 5 to a 2 or 3 before it gets to Fuku, at least thats what Weather Underground is reporting - but that is still pretty strong...just updated on Jeff Master's blog: In the Western Pacific, Typhoon Neoguri has strengthened into a dangerous Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds this Sunday morning, and is headed west-northwest at 12 mph towards a Tuesday brush with Okinawa in Japan's Ryukyu island chain. Satellite images show a huge and well-organized system, with a prominent eye, and very intense eyewall thunderstorms with cold cloud tops. WInd shear is light, 5 - 10 knots, sea surface temperatures are a very warm 30 - 31°C, and very warm waters extend to great depth along the storm's path, giving the typhoon plenty of heat energy to power potential intensification into a Category 5 Super Typhoon...Although ocean temperatures will cool and wind shear will rise as Neoguri approaches Japan, weakening the storm, the typhoon is so large and powerful that it will likely make landfall at Category 2 or 3 strength, causing major damage in Japan. RadChick (OP) User ID: 53635335 United States 07/06/2014 01:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Published yesterday by Fuku Diary, ANOTHER leak (or several) but this at the common sfp (the big one): Contaminated groundwater has started breaking into common pool, to where Tepco is transferring the fuel assemblies from Reactor4 pool. From Tepco’s announcement of 7/3/2014, they found groundwater was leaking into the basement floor of common pool building from 3 points of through-hole for piping. They state the water is drained from the floor funnel to contaminated water circulating system. The water is reported to be just groundwater, however it is contaminated. Cesium-134 density : 21,000 Bq/m3 Cesium-137 density : 60,000 Bq/m3 All β nuclide density : 170,000 Bq/m3 It is not clear why the contaminated groundwater suddenly started breaking into the common pool. (end snip) Hmmm, wonder how this ties in with what is happening at #5?
