What goes on in U.S. "Elite Boarding Schools"? | |

The names I have heard are Andover, Exeter, Choate, Groton, Deerfield, and there are some others. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24081241 What's the deal with those places? Is that where they teach the kids of the elite "how it really works" or is it just bullshit? I expect that they share a lot in common with places like Eton and Rugby in the UK. I didn't go to boarding school, but I did go to a private country day school that primarily served the progeny of the establishment in Central Ohio; old money mostly. However, the school serves more than just the old bourgeoise and ruling class in the city now. I remember spending most of my time focusing on a rigorous courseload and trying to get the best grades possible before applying to an elite university during the fall of my senior year. In a certain kind of way, I already knew where I was going to get into school before writing and submitting my CommonApp thanks to a college counselor directing me towards the right place to go. Elite secondary schools are where a lot of elite adolescents and young adults begin to come to an understanding of who they are in the broader socioeconomic hierarchy. We do this by making friends with each other, or at least acquaintances. After graduation, just about everyone goes to college immediately unless they really want to join the military or travel the world during a gap year. After that, some people sort into extracurricular activities aimed at high schoolers, such as Princeton, Yale, or Harvard Model Congress or something like MITES, MOSTEC, and E2 at MIT; more connections are made...networks become wider and deeper...social circles start to form. After more time passes, cliques form; we congregate in separate boxes after figuring out what we want to do...also, there are cliques within the cliques...spheres of influence and control. But no, people are just jealous instead of trying to emulate. Stupid really. |

Many people are jealous and want to bring you down instead of trying to improve themselves. It starts very early in life. I don't know how the elite schools their kids, but building up kids' character and exposing them to logical thinking and science as early as possible should make perfect sense to any parent. My 9 yo daughter is very curious about how the nature works. I'm a physicist and her mother is a trained scientist too, so logical argumentation/thinking and appreciation for science comes naturally in our family. I've spent hours just answering my daughter's questions about e.g. space, how stars produce light and heat, what is electricity, and why some materials are soft and brittle while some are hard and strong. We also do extra home schooling in mathematics. So far she enjoys it, and we'll keep doing it as long as she's not completely hostile to the idea. It's sad to hear how she gets ridiculed by some of her classmates for exhibiting rational thought and showing interest in mathematics and nature. She knows so much more than what the school teaches and I fear that one day she's going to start hiding it to "fit in better". Dr. Strange - The long-lost brother of the late Dr. Moran. |

The best part of it is the joy of interacting with a truly curious human being who is still open to ideas and sees things from a completely different and often surprising perspective. It happens even when we discuss mathematics. To me it all looks so simple and I tend to go about it in my old ways, but she has shown me new ways of doing and visualizing elementary school mathematics. My first reaction has often been "no way it can be correct like that", but it is. I'm so proud of her when I get careless and she catches me doing a mistake. I also learn a lot from all that. It's just priceless. Dr. Strange - The long-lost brother of the late Dr. Moran. |
