They are missing any rich FLAVOR for sure. Why? Who knows? GMOs? I bought a few organic ones that cost a LOT and they really were not that more tasty than the lower dollar ones. I don't know. Why is this? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 60111224 United States 07/12/2014 03:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Watermelon freak here. I've had watermelons from San Francisco health food co-op that were bright yellow inside and crazy good, better than the red ones as a kid. It is now impossible to find good tasting melons at regular grocery stores, no matter where you go in the US. The mini "organic" seedless are a bit better than the shwag melons you now find at Safeway and others, but ya - pricey, and many times not good at all. there are some farmers markets up north of the bay there in Marin that have wide varieties of melons, but they are delicate, expensive, and can smash easy, which is why you don't see those types shipped around. Grow your own. Plenty of heirloom varieties online - they need heat and water. You probably missed the timing on growing them this season, in most parts northern hemi. |

A seedless melon has been picked green and stored till almost rotten, therefore no sugar development. try to find a local farmers market, and look for a large melon, that is heavy for its size. :glp111: |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60143220 Maybe they are GMO, so they have high yields and are resistant to molds and insects, could even have fish DNA. I do know large farms sell them way before the sun has a chance to ripen them so they try to ripen sitting in the store. The last several years I have bought them they have a bitter taste and not sweet at all. I think that's why I don't buy and eat much fruit or vegetables , they don't have a good taste. It becomes less of a source of good nutrition. The earth needs a break. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 55175482 United States 07/12/2014 03:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | am I the only one who has noticed this? have my tastebuds gone awry? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60144128 Not at all. We went food shopping about two weeks ago and bought a bunch of stuff. Wife wanted to get some fruit so she bought half p a watermellon. 2-3 days or so later a major funk smell struck the inside of the refrigerator. One so bad that as soon as the door opened we were hit with a wall of rancid. So one by one we took out the left overs thinking the smell had to be coming from something thats been in there for too long. We threw away so much stuff but none of it seemed to be the source but even the slightest of off scents we threw it away because we just had to get rid of this disgusting smell It smelled like straight up vinigar mixed with rot and what ever else you can think of that reeks to high heaven. The watermellon being brand new and appearing to still be completely fresh neither of us even thought to check it. I mean it was just bought and looked fresh as it did at the store. Thinking now that everything in the fridge was either new or sealed containers that couldn't be leaking a smell we waited over night expecting the smell to be gone in the morning. Got rid of milk and anything else that could have went bad. Woke up, and the smell after opening the fridge was worse and we had no idea what it could be. We even thought maybe the fridge was broken or maybe some critter got inside the under neathe of the fridge and died or something. Wife just moving things around at this point picking every last thing up determined to find the source of this hell smell And as soon as she picked up the perfect looking watermellon took one whiff and damn near vomited running to the trash can and then immediately to the bathroom gagging the whole way. There is definately something strange going on with watermelons. Almost as if they've been injected with something because there is no way that brand new Mellon or any Mellon naturally would smell like the strongest upper vinegar mixed with rancid rot after 2 days in a fridge. I mean i have never even guessed that a watermellon could ever smell like that even if left out in the sun for weeks. This smell was so bad and now our family will never buy another piece of fruit and will only eat fruit and veggies grown in our or our families gardens religiously. I had my conspiracy thoughts as well but it was only after seeing this thread that i realized we may not be the only ones experiencing freaky things with fruit. Thank goodness we didnt eat it because it didnt smell like that at first and only took a day or two to over run the fridge. No clue what was in that Mellon but it surely wasn't natural. Almost felt like something had seriously been injected into it that was meant to be eaten quickly to hide the evidence but luckily enough we didnt eat the first day. So I'll confirm your warning here I would avoid eating any store bought fruit or veggies for a long while with everything going on in the world because it might sound far fetched but terror often times can come in unexpected forms and from places that already have our trust. Places like our local supermarkets. Be careful everyone Things are getting seriously strange. Frickin death by watermelons. Really? Come on! Can't trust anyone at the moment and anyone getting offeded at not being trusted i living in the past because we are living in dangerous times with most people in complete denial about it. It's time to start collecting things. Important things Like seeds And maybe sharp objects. Lol. Yay what an awesome time to be alive. If we didnt already have to be punished enough for the crimes of others. Man. Yippie |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 58351648 United States 07/12/2014 03:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Don't buy seedless watermelons. Buy organic. Seedless are mutants. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40558540 Seedless are just vines cut off and rooted into new plants. Eventually producing a plant that doesn't seed. I still don't agree with it but it isn't a tragic genetic mutation as some believe. All Bananas are a clone (rooting) of a parent plant. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 59965873 Canada 07/12/2014 04:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | for the past couple of years I have not been able to find heritage watermelons. The ones I find I don't eat they are tasteless and go rancid quickly. The "old" watermelons were redder in colour and sweeter than what you will find in todays grocery store. I used to collect the black seeds and dry them out. Later running the seeds through a grinder and using the crushed seed to make a tea. The "watermelon seed tea" will clear up any urinary tract infection, in about 20 minutes. Use one heaping teaspoon of crushed seed per teacup/mug, let steep for 15 minutes or so, for full benefit |

I guess you just have to know where the good ones are at. When you find a piece of shit along side the road and you poke it with a stick, what do you expect to find inside of it, gold? No, it's just going to stink more. |
