Interesting that Iraq is calling out a NATO member on infringing of it's sovereignty. If it were any other eastern country outside of the NATO sphere we would have heard western warnings long ago. Ofcourse, nothing is happening, not a word.

The problem with Turkey, like much of the rest of NATO, is that they seem to think they can just about do anything they want. Iraq has made it's wishes clear. No way would Turkey tolerate Iraqi/Syrian troops on it's own territory, yet here they are marching across borders left and right like they own the place. Can you blame Iraq denying Turkish involvement? What reason does anyone have to trust them?

So if it comes to blows, who is the US going to support out of these two allies? Support Turkey, you risk Iraq seeking support somewhere else, like Russia, support Iraq, and you will have Turkey going completely rogue if they aren't already. What a complete embarrassment that would be. Even if they stay out of it completely. Both are going to look at the US with fury for abandoning them.

What a mess.

I think Turkey would be on its own since it is operating as an occupation force without a NATO mandate, but Iraq doesn't stand a chance one-on-one against Turkey, which means, if they start shooting, Iran would come to Iraq's aid, which means regional Sunni-Shiite war.

Sooo... Risking a war with Iraq/Iran just to keep the PKK from involving themselves with the coming Mosul operation, atleast that's their excuse for it's current presence in Iraq, if i'm right... That's a heavy price. And what do they get in return?

Turkey has now occupied territory of both Syria/Iraq, both demanding Turkey to remove it's forces. Judging by international law, Turkey doesnt even have a leg to stand on. All it seemingly does is bringing more isolation upon itself.

It would seem more logical to tolerate PKK activity within Iraq rather than risking a far more destructive regional war with unforeseen consequences... Then again, i don't think like a Turk.

From reading some Iraqi news lately, it sounds like Turkey has bigger plans than just keeping Kurds out of the fight. Turkey has made statements that Mosul should remain exclusively Sunni once ISIS is removed, which is none of their business, and Iraqi politicians, in the last few days, have been saying Turkey has designs on the western, Sunni part of Iraq. Erdogan, as we have seen here many times, fancies himself a new Ottoman Emperor, and taking a large swath of western Iraq would fit well with that. The Shiite militias that are waiting on the Mosul operation are already saying they will engage with Turkey if Turkey tries to get involved. Iranian Major-General Soleimani is back in Iraq commanding those Shiite forces, and Iraq's prime minister has already warned Turkey of regional war if they do involve themselves in Mosul, so if Turkey does anything other than prevent ISIS from entering Turkey, this could explode really quickly.
