You don't think anything was said in the cockpit before or right after being hit? If they were being tailed there is a good chance they would have noticed and the pilots almost certainly would have said something to each other?

I think you underestimate what can be determined with the information in that box... What part of the plane took the hit? Was it hit more then once? Was an engine hit or the body of the plane? All could stack up to evidence ruling out whether it was a sam or a fighter fired missile which would have been smaller and have less of an impact ...again something that sensor data may give a clue about. The recorded sound of the impact alone may have a signature that can be matched to one or the other.

Russia blew out of sky kal #007 over sky a number of years ago.
